For review and approval and archive use, my clients seem to use a lot of h.254 in 640X360 from 500k to 1Mb per sec, depending on their whims.
One of the great things about CatDV is that if you’re working on something like DSLR, you might not even need to make a proxy unless you’re using the web. Tons of footage flows through shops that never gets proxy, just thumbnails and you can call a restore or leave it online if it’s small stuff. For RED, obviously you’ll want to create a more manageable proxy but I always bring that up when folks come over from FCS.
For raw speed, I’d also consider setting up something a bit heavier like Compressor or Episode (if you’re on a mac, Win would need other options) to make those proxies if you have a large amount of footage. The Worker Node can hand off jobs through the command line. The Worker is a great product but it’s not a cluster or a dedicated transcoding engine and you might need multiples if you’re doing a lot of proxy or other jobs will sit and wait while you crunch video.

Strange question…have you played these proxy files in Quicktime player?
My thought is that if those MTS files are spanned, CatDV and Episode might not do that whereas another tool would.
Make sure that QT Player and CatDV are seeing different durations. If not, check the tool you’re using to look at the clips and also strange things like licensing issues. (some unlicensed codecs will only play a certain number of frames when in demo mode, etc..)
This is a stumper.

But wait, are you not on a Server version? If not, please tell us up front because we tend to assume that your settings are always matched by logging into a production group.
(I may have missed that bit of info before, of course.)
Glad it’s sorted but yes… Settings are everything in CatDV… at least everything that’s not paths or Quicktime.

Yet another mystery solved! Someday we will conquer them all and then what will I do with my off hours? 🙂
I stand corrected and that makes sense as to why they would “float” in certain situations and not be editable.
I’ll do some more testing on the date searches over here too.

On Lion, it’s hidden, use the Finder’s “Go” menu and select:
Go>Go to folder… and that’ll let you type what you need. If you enter:
~/Library
You’ll get to the Library folder.
However, if you’re on v9, you can just go to Tools>Export Preferences and save them out and swap that file between machines. (Thanks Rolf!)

Not a stupid one, but there’s a terminology issue.
Record date isn’t reee-cord date, as in, “when was this recorded?” It’s record date like, “when was this record entered into the database?”
It’s auto entered by the system and shouldn’t be editable in most setups. (I think you can do one at a time, but bulk editing just blanks the value.) Someone check me here. I may be way wrong.
As to a custom field, only USER fields of the type DATE are searchable as dates…
Now for the fun part. On my rig, 9.0.6 with server 6.6b12, I can’t search a user date field either. You may have found a bug.
Support?? Any thoughts. I enter 12/21/2011 into a date field that I created and get “no record” found. hmm…

Hey guys, I’ve been working on an article on this subject but I’ll drop the quick version on here.
1 – Absolutely, Compressor, for $50 gives you all the codecs. This is legal, easy and actually pretty cool for Apple to do. Note that you do have to run software update after you pull Compressor from the App Store in order to get all the codecs.
2 – If you own FCP 7, you get a qmaster license with that that allows you to install the qmaster cluster services on all machines on your lan so you can have a cluster… and yes, those machines all get the codecs, even if you never get around to building that cluster. 😉 It’s fully legal, (but still read the fine print, I’m no lawyer) if the machines are on your LAN and you own even a single copy of FCP7 (FC Studio version whatever?)
3 – That old dusty copy of Final Cut Server that you have lying around? Yup, it includes Compressor and all the codecs.
If you use XDCAM there are some minor caveats which I’ll add to this when I get a chance but it sounds like this is all you need.

Man, generally server versions translate up. There can be some issues here and there but generally Squarebox encourages us to update the Server. The features come down as needed from the client side.
Good news is that if you backup the db, you can always downgrade if it tests badly.
Rolf, you wanna confirm that?
If you need a specific version buzz me, I usually have a backlog of them.

This has been “on the list” forever. I’m pretty sure it’s not been implemented due to the structure of CatDV. Markers aren’t “assets” so they cannot be called directly from a query.
Could someone from Squarebox speak to this directly in case I’m out of line on this?
