It’s gotta be the installed codecs on the systems.
Can you check more than one computer? Also, try to open the files in QT player and see that they play correctly.

Use the views to export the assets as XML and drop them into a program to turn them into a contact sheet.
Or, just copy or export them as thumbnails, (simpler and maybe as fast) and drop them into photoshop.
Unless there’s an edit I’m not aware of.

2 thoughts, first, you might want as a best practice, to use ISO formatted dates. Way easier to deal with (2013-02-19). This not only sorts dates more correctly (year, month, day) it’s a standard for dealing with other systems as well so you don’t have to translate.
Secondly, I’ve seldom used simple searches on anything date related mostly due to the extra granularity you can get by searching within x days of a date in advanced.
Try changing your date format and see if that helps in the basic search window. Mine searches fine with ISO dates.

Speed is not the issue, clearly.
The only other factor I have is the player. Have you tried both Xuggle and Quicktime? That might lead us to see if it’s a qt issue as we saw in the past.
Also, can you play these proxies in the QT player on the respective machines? Is playback only an issue in CatDV?

We’ve moved most folks to mp4 for better compatibility, but not had anyone edit them.
Of course you lose true “frame accuracy” with h.264 but as long as someone checks things I would think that you are ok. (we add window burn to both confirm the TC and also to keep people from shipping something with proxy in the final.
As to encoding, test your Episode encode times. In version 6 we’ve seen some longer than normal encode times on h.264. (x.264 is longer still.) I’d like to see your experience. You can benchmark against the the Worker or just quicktime pro or mpeg streamclip as a test.

You are on the right path with the dummy clips. I am working on using that same methodology to track project archive info now.
Updating those from the outside is easily done and people can watch them for status.
I’m a fan of adding clickable links as well. Approval-Q (our review and approval tool) writes back the asset link to CatDV so that you can track the outside view of the asset or email them from the Worker and it’s a cut and paste at the moment to view those.
We actually got an early client just due to the fact that we could do a table view of their metadata in HTML so I know this feature is desired.
Project Management is a huge problem in this space. All the options are expensive. It’s something that I have an eye towards as well. Sounds like you’re in a good direction to tweak you MAM to provide the basics.

Have you done raw speed tests on the client systems?
Just looking for network issues in here.
This seems like it should be sortable without a platform change but to be honest I’m far better on OS X than Windows. It would seem that if this was a basic issue with CatDV Pro we’d have seen it here as there are tons of deployments with Windows clients.
Try speed testing the volumes on OS X and WIN and see what you get, taking CatDV out of the equation.

We usually do these things with an external view by publishing out to a report page in HTML.
Always evaluate if it’s better to keep that data in CatDV, an asset management system, or publishing it out into another system such as your billing system. Often there’s a better way to present that data in another interface away from the assets.
One note to everyone on this board. You can, in some cases, purchase a feature from Squarebox. I’ve done this with good results in the past.

Back many moons ago, we had issues with quicktime proxy over a network on Windows. This was an MS and Apple thing.
Are you using mp4 or mov wrapper?
Have you tried an mp4 over the network?

Is that encode only, or does it also support playback?
The docs I saw only mentioned encoding.
Do you have a specific issue with Calibrated? Greg from Calibrated lurks here and is usually pretty good to respond to issues.
