To be honest, I have no idea how to check my pulldown pattern…
So if the media is supposed to be listed at 29.97 when it’s 24p then perhaps the 6 tapes I’ve captured so far are correct anyways, IF it’s 24p and not 24pa. With an intended delivery of television, wouldn’t it make sense to have just shot it in 24p?

Would the frame rate still be listed as 29.97 or would it be 23.98 AND what would my timeline framerate be?
By the way, THANK YOU so much for your help, I could have been peddling around on this problem all day…

I’m giving the DP a call this morning… but even if it’s 24p instead of 24pa, what easy setup would I use since none of the others list 1080p24…
Also really quick – I noticed that there’s no smart start stop embedded in the video or timecode breaks so I’m getting entire 30 minute tapes as a single clip. I usually have an assistant editor except this one was tight on a budget and when I have captured and logged my footage say using HDCAM decks in the past even with different DP’s, the HDCAM either had tiny TC breaks to indicate clip breaks or had the smart start stop thing. Any quick fix for that?

Yes, AJHD1400 deck – yes 1080p24a preset. There aren’t any other 24fps or 23.98fps 1080 settings so that’s kind of hard to mess up, I’m capturing through firewire. The DP owns a pair of these cameras along with several F900’s and tons of other equipment, the guy has shot some incredible material before so I doubt he forgot to set his frame rate to 23.98 but I guess it could be a possibility. Hmmmm, perhaps it’s a deck setting? I reset the deck to the factory settings before capturing, which should be sending out whatever frame rate the tape is natively correct? The pulldown is removed during capture correct?
Oh and the only issue I’ve been having with 6.0.1 is the damn audio render files jumping into different sections of songs so when originally I’d have a nice slow fade in at the beginning of song, it’ll fade into say the middle of a song, it’s quite frustrating sometimes…

Oh I’m sorry I didn’t mention that – yes they are definitely at SATA II and energy saver stuff is off.
I just received a reply from Sonnet (took them only a couple hours to respond, wow). Turns out I needed to update the firmware on the Sonnet card but they said the WD terabyte drives should have no issue…
Awesome, 4tb Raid0 in a compact case with led indicator lights and independent fan for cooling all for $1200. That’s pretty amazing…

Damn, well I think I’m stuck with these drives – I didn’t go Hitachi because they performed so sluggishly in all the speed tests on barefeats and they were almost talking negatively about them, and they cost more.
With a software raid, is it more processor intensive or memory intensive? Maybe scrolling around 4 tb of data in a software raid requires more ram than 2.5 gigs?
Also on a side note, I had to remove that big clear plastic piece with the bubble thing on it that goes behind the metal side of the case because of clearance issues with the SATA cables coming off the sonnet card and I didn’t want to buy 4 more cables with angled connectors. That piece isn’t essential for cooling the computer is it? I could see how it would funnel air more effectively from the fans but it didn’t seem essential…

The plan is for a film out – so I could only assume they wanted to shoot at the same frame rate as film for a better film out workflow? We initially tried capturing at 23.98 with the same results anyways…

Interesting to know, thanks for the info. Honestly I haven’t handled tape stock for capturing in quite some time since most of what I’ve worked on in the past couple years is handled by assistants and I just usually entered to prepped edit bays OR I’m delivered hard drives – so it takes me back to when I was editing my own short films on miniDV etc. and those things were pretty weak stock it seemed so I’ve been wary of handling and shuttling tape stock since the olden days 🙂
Well it seems we were able to resolve our capture issues but we’re still not exactly sure where the problem was exactly. We reinstalled the old drivers that came with the Decklink HD Pro and that seems to work now – though strangely enough we can’t see any video on the preview window while capturing but once the tape finishes, the clips have been captured perfectly with TC etc. and all is well (oh, and they capture fine onto a single internal SATA drive). It seems like FCP 5 and his macpro and this capture card and deck just didn’t work well together. FCP 6 now works for capturing but the newest drivers from Decklink didn’t work properly but the old ones that came packaged with the card do… uh so, wish I could impart some knowledge onto others from what we learned but I’m not sure what I can gather from all of this. I still have a feeling if we would have been on my G5, all would have been well, everything runs so reliably on it…

Though I was really trying to avoid this method so there wouldn’t be excessive wear and tear on these master HDCAM tapes jogging back and forth to set ins and outs – I know when there is a TC break that it locates the TC break for you which is some back and forth but it seems like just to set the ins and outs would a lot of jogging around on our master tapes…
Were you capturing to single SATA drives or a raid setup?
