  • HDX 1080p24 capturing in FCP quick verify question…

Posted by Bryan Roberts on April 7, 2008 at 10:05 pm

    Hey all,

I’m capturing tapes in FCP 6.0.1 (this release has been very stable for my a dual core g5 tower so I didn’t want to upgrade to any of the newer versions yet) for a feature I’m about to start editing shot on the HDX in 1080 24fps in a 1.85 aspect ratio capturing through firewire on an HD1400 deck. The deck is set to the factory default settings and I capture successfully using an easy setup of DVCPRO HD – 1080pA24 but after I finish capturing a clip, when I click to see the properties it says it’s 29.97 fps with a compressor of DVCPROHD1080i60 . Is this just a wrapper for the 108024 frame rate? When I pull it into a timeline of 1080p24 it says that that’s not optimum and wants to change it to 29.97 fps timeline … when I watch the clips the frame rate looks correct with no weird motion issues so am I good to go? What should my timeline be set to? By the way, this has a goal of TV distribution if that helps frame rate questions…

Is this correct? Thanks for your help!

You have to capture and remove the pulldown. If you are getting 29.97 files, you have captured improperly. You should be editing in a 23.98 timeline.

The preset is marked as DVCPro HD 1080p24A. As long as your footage was truly shot @ 24pA and you are capturing via firewire with an AJ1400 deck, you should be good.

The name of the Compressor is 1080i60, don’t worry about that. It’s just the name of the codec.

Upgrading to FCP 6.0.2 is an easy upgrade (your render files don’t disappear on 6.0.1?) by the way. I am not telling you to upgrade, but I am just saying it’s not bad to do so.

Yes, AJHD1400 deck – yes 1080p24a preset. There aren’t any other 24fps or 23.98fps 1080 settings so that’s kind of hard to mess up, I’m capturing through firewire. The DP owns a pair of these cameras along with several F900’s and tons of other equipment, the guy has shot some incredible material before so I doubt he forgot to set his frame rate to 23.98 but I guess it could be a possibility. Hmmmm, perhaps it’s a deck setting? I reset the deck to the factory settings before capturing, which should be sending out whatever frame rate the tape is natively correct? The pulldown is removed during capture correct?

Oh and the only issue I’ve been having with 6.0.1 is the damn audio render files jumping into different sections of songs so when originally I’d have a nice slow fade in at the beginning of song, it’ll fade into say the middle of a song, it’s quite frustrating sometimes…

[Bryan R] “which should be sending out whatever frame rate the tape is natively correct?”

    Through fw, yes.

[Bryan R] “The pulldown is removed during capture correct? “

Should be, yes. Unless 6.0.1 couldn’t do this. I don’t know.

Double check the deck settings and make sure you 1080i out is playing 1080. Are you sure it’s 24pA and not 24p? What’s the pulldown pattern?

I’m giving the DP a call this morning… but even if it’s 24p instead of 24pa, what easy setup would I use since none of the others list 1080p24…

Also really quick – I noticed that there’s no smart start stop embedded in the video or timecode breaks so I’m getting entire 30 minute tapes as a single clip. I usually have an assistant editor except this one was tight on a budget and when I have captured and logged my footage say using HDCAM decks in the past even with different DP’s, the HDCAM either had tiny TC breaks to indicate clip breaks or had the smart start stop thing. Any quick fix for that?

In that case you’d use the DVCPro HD 1080i60 easy setup.

Would the frame rate still be listed as 29.97 or would it be 23.98 AND what would my timeline framerate be?

By the way, THANK YOU so much for your help, I could have been peddling around on this problem all day…

    29.97, both media and timeline.

What does your pulldown pattern look like?

To be honest, I have no idea how to check my pulldown pattern…

So if the media is supposed to be listed at 29.97 when it’s 24p then perhaps the 6 tapes I’ve captured so far are correct anyways, IF it’s 24p and not 24pa. With an intended delivery of television, wouldn’t it make sense to have just shot it in 24p?

When you go through your footage frame by frame, do you see a pattern of three whole frames (no interlacing) then two segmented frames (two frames with interlace jitter) then 3 whole then 2 segmented over and over? Or do you see 4 whole frames and 1 segmented?

Load the clip in the viewer, set it to 100%, find a bit of motion, and step through it counting the frames with interlacing and the frames without. See if the pattern is 2:3:2:3, or 2:3:3:2.

    All the best,

    Tom
