  • Does your image sequence have an alpha channel? If not than I wouldn’t use 444. You can try ProRes HQ, which I have found to be a satisfactory codec.

    I am having similar issues. One work-around I found was to transcode the footage to an d external codec (i.e. H264) and then re-transcode back to the native codec. It seems to work for me intermittently, but it’s worth a try.

    Jerry;

    Does anyone know why this might be happening?

    Now the problem is occurring on our other edit bay (she’s using an AJA KONA board, aslo digitizing to ProRes HQ over SDI input.

    Sorry about that. It’s a Apple ProRes (HQ) file digitized using a BlackMagic DeckLink Extreme card over SDI input.

    AhHA! There was, and once it was removed the problem sorted itself out. A pity. I liked the look of the fog. Is there any way to keep it on and not get that effect?

    Thank you all for your help!

    Thank you for responding! And yes. I’ve also tried inverting the straight alpha’s color and even putting pure white behind the talent. But that weird outline always seems to show up.

    Just to update, the problem was in the Deck and the video cards therein, not in any way on the AJA card.

    Thanks for all the good tips!

    We’ve tried DV NTSC and it works fine (the system won’t even recognize the new ProRes codec, which sucks but whatchagonnado?). The problem would seem to be in how it handles the transcoding of H.264 files. This doesn’t make a lot of sense for me because the Omneon server we’re using says it prefers long GOP compression schemes.

    We used to archive everything in ProRes HQ, but when space became an issue we had to switch to H264 for archive. Its small file size and great quality make it ideal for keeping a record of spots.

    And thanks for the response!

    Okay, finally got it figured out. Had a brain blast overt the weekend and did some tweaking. Turns out it was a combination of a bad deck card (they literally guaranteed me it wasn’t the deck until I brought them the defective card), and my own poor setup of the AJA card. I now have a fully functional edit suite.

    I really want to thank everyone who commented on this issue, you’ve been an invaluable help. and now I know what info is needed when posting in these forums!

    Again, thank you!

    The thing that kills me is that if I’m in the 720p down-convert mode, if I connect it to an SD monitor it looks like garbage.

    I’ve tried the same files on a Blackmagic card and they look great, so I’m beginning to think it’s just the way the AJA card down-converts….
