We surely did not know any better so we dealt with it. I do remember being frustrated when there was the warning of a clip collision. Now that there is a better way, we can get things done faster. So when we have to edit in PP and manage tracks and somewhere down the line things go out of sync, time is wasted trying to fix it.

Yes PP can add meta data to clips and whatnot but doing it in FCP X is faster and more efficient. For example: When creating a marker in PP and then dragging it out to make a range, does the video scrub as you drag the range? Um no. I have to guess and then scrub the video itself to find where I want it, and then drag range to that point. Flimsy at best. It is the time it takes to do things in PP that turns me off. Yes there are inefficiencies in FCP X but they don’t seem to affect my workflows as much.

Don’t even get me started about managing tracks.

  • Jerry, is your stock footage on a raid or just an external drive? Your drive may be the bottle neck. Some external drives just can’t make the cut.

If DaVinci Resolve keeps doing these updates they may just as well be king of the NLEs.

That’s ok, I am talking about a solid color generator.

Not an effect but a solid layer.

Could you just add a matte layer and then your pic layer and than select whichever one and resize?

Yes, I understood your issue. Just trying to think of a better way to do it without to much trouble. Of course I think of it after the fact sometimes on my projects. For this situation I would have created a compound clip with just the colored bar and then add the individual text later for each one. If I change my mind on the color, I can do it by just changing one compound clip. If the text stays the same for all lower thirds as well, include that in the compound clip.

I thought you could do that with a compound clip? If that compound clip is other places in the timeline, making changes to one will change all.

  • Could you use a thunderbolt to HDMI adapter? We connected a Ninja Blade to HDMI to record the screen and lost my second monitor. When I used the adapter I had 3 monitors including the Ninja. This is from a 2013 mac pro.
