    How was the recorder connected to the house mixer XLR’s or the 6.5mm sockets?
    What the connection Aux or Matrix or Main Output (XLR) or RCA?
    What was your input level set at?

    Cd’s and broadcasting TV / Radio mostly is 16bit 44.1Khz ,Mastering and production normally occurs at 24bit 48Khz.

    The human voice range is actually quite small, you don’t need high sampling rates. An approx guide is half the digital sampling rate is the maximum audio frequency that can be recorded. i.e. 32Khz digital = 16Kz (audio), 44.1 Khz digital = 22khz (audio), 48Khz digital = 24Khz (audio).

    Its often best to stay at the one level of sampling for any production rather than up and down converting, so if you are using a reasonable amount of CD then let that dictate the sample rate of 44.1Khz.
    If you are going into high sample rate FX recording for feature films then go to 48Khz.
    If you are producing material for internet consumption 32Khz will be more than enough.

    Up and down conversions take up data space, time and processor power, why do it if you don’t need to do it.

    Why are you wanting to use 24 bit 192Khz?
    This will only cause problems in post production with conversion rates.
    What will your end product end up on this will determine the settings that you should choose?

  • Jonathan, Rode NT3 as a boom mic, isn’t that a bit heavy?
    How do you deal with the constant acoustic flanging between the 2 different mics as the talent moves slightly?
    Also recording at 96k, are you keeping the same sample rate throughout your workflow or are you changing several times during your edit session which could often lead to problems?

  • What you are needing to do is pad the output signal from +4 (pro level) down to -10 (consumer RCA) level.

    So you need a 15db pad to get the units matched correctly, putting in ‘active’ gain controls only add noise and weak links into the chain.

    For just a few cents worth of resistors you can get the levels right….

  • You need to mix by listening with your ears and NOT by using numbers.

  • Location sound basics….. (If you want good sound)

    A shotgun mic should should be no further than one arm length from the mouth.
    A camera mounted mic is normally much further than one arm length away from the talent, so it won’t deliver adequate sound.
    If you are using wide shots and want to get good sound then use radio mics, either record on separate tracks or mix them (with a mixer and operator) on location.

    Simply there is no other way to get good sound but the tried and true methods.
    What is your production worth in $$$$ (time, labour & effort) just don’t throw it all away because of poor sound.

    Rule 1. of recording……NEVER, NEVER delete ANYTHING without first creating a backup copy.
    Rule 2. Do a backup recording on a different machine…..with a DIFFERENT powering source.
    Rule 3. Do not store the 2 data storage mediums / Discs in the same location.

    This is BASIC computer data stuff… Audio data is NO different.
