metal only looks like what it’s reflecting, if your lights are not properly aligned to reflect into the camera you will only see the metal reflecting the pure black of the 3D environment unless you put something in the environment or use a texture in the reflection or environment channels in the metal material or use a texture on a sky or something like hdri studio.

I do not know if this is the “best” way it’s just what seemed easiest to control in a quick trial at the time. The Tiles inside the main color layer are pretty easy compared to a image generated in PS… controlling where each tile channel cuts off with the Falloff used as a Layer Mask and just adjusting the falloff gradient a bit for each. Falloff is pointed in Z and that’s where there is an Infinite light to give an even light from that direction. The Material tag is currently set to Frontal which gives a pretty good look but follows the camera and an animating object like the golf ball would roll ‘through’ the etching. It can also be set to Flat which would not have the texture lines follow the camera but the golf ball would still roll through it…

are you using the Standard or Physical renderer? It looks like standard or the sampling quality is up a bunch in physical but either way you should not get grey blur in the DOF unless there is something else going on. What version of C4D? Can you post the scene file?

do you want just the model’s face (like in the example image) or do you want the entire image to have the etching like the results of the tutorial? It should be possible to texture the 3d elements of a scene like that in C4D but if you want the entire finished image (the areas to the left and right of the models face in the example image) to have the etching it would have to be done in post.

Do you have ambient occlusion turned on?

it’s something to do with the Real Light setting of the lights – if you remove them altogether the dots go away, if you turn off “Real Light” and go with the “GI Light” (and turn on GI) the dots go away…. it’s not the Shadow settings – turn off the shadows and still dots.
Take away only one of the lights and you get only some of the dots so they both do it. The dots are there in Standard and Physical renderers…
I would toss the lights and use some other method to light the scene (or change to GI (if you can afford the render time) where they seem to do ok).
hmmm…. I was able to get similar dots by using GSG Light Kit softboxes – I was able to remove them by cranking up the lights Samples setting (you can tweak light setting directly in GSG as the lights are not hidden) to a lot higher than the default 40. Something similar is probably happening with your lights – I’m guessing it’s a rectangular Area light which is parallel to your flat surface so the individual samples are visible at the right angle and they have to be increased in number to blend together (or don’t use a rectangular Area light which is parallel to your flat surface)

are there phong/normal tags on the object? If so, try removing those… what program did the ‘grabber’ come from? What file format was it when you receive it? Which renderer are you using? I might have to see the file to have a clue as I haven’t seen that before outside of caustics settings (or someone doing a ‘disco ball’) and I’m really just guessing.

  • it can be done with Booles – this is one way (there are probably many more) 10343_booleembeddedlogo.c4d.zip
