Brilliant! Brilliant! Thanks Dan!
I love this board.. I just hate the stupid name, it should have been called “Gifted Goose” “Inventive Emu”, or perhaps “Sorta Smart Squirrel”.
Thank you so much.. I really appreciate it.

Unless there is something the service people can access, the answer is no. I have three canons.. xl-h1, xh-a1, and hv30.. I bought them all new, partially for that reason. I have a sony hvr-a1u, and it does.. I’m not sure why they do this (or don’t).. but no, no way to tell. Personally, I would be careful, I know I have a NEW HV30 that if I was to sell, there is no way the person who bought it would know that I have been using it as an editing deck.. I’ve run over 300 hours though it, but it still looks nice, new and shiny and still works great, but I kind of doubt they are made for that kind of abuse.

No.. didn’t think of it.. it’s surprising what you don’t think about at 1:00 AM. As far as the manual.. I didn’t find anything on it, but that was on the online manual.. wondering if the printed one has other info.. if so, that’s stupid.. but I guess it’s worth checking.
I’ll try this, but thanks for the suggestion.

Personally, I never run it in auto.. I’ve had a couple of experiences where the sound is clipped in regular speech..
I would rather have the audio record in manual at too low a level though a clean source (good mic, maybe a preamp).. than to use the auto mode.
I think Canon did alot to get the autofocus on the A1 working much better than the XLH1, but auto on the mic still is pretty weak..
All in all.. if I can, I run everything in manual, tough to do in run and gun.. but if your in a more static situation, you just get more consistent results.

January 27, 2008 at 1:13 am in reply to: How to randomize video clips used as particlesThank you Bogie-san!
This explains alot, I exported Raw HDV 1080i60 for the video clip.. (shot in 1080F30).. thinking that the more times you convert the more garbage you create. It didn’t ever occur to me that using the quicktime format may actually give you more possibilities. I did go in and look for those fields with the 1080i60 clip and (Shazam!) they ain’t there..
Having said that.. I am really impressed with Motion. I’ve been using FCP for about 2 version and I figured that there wasn’t that much useful I (personally) could find in compositing, but this is a really cool package.
I would strongly recommend buying the DMTS package (I had the old one.. only has Motion 1 & 2).. but it gets you up to speed very fast, at least gets you up to a place where you can really start experimenting on a not completely an idiot level. You can often find them used on ebay.. but well worth the money even if you pay full retail.
Thanks again!

Beautiful!
I’ve never used any of these functions of Compressor.. I always did this in the timeline and figured that was the only way to do it.. Thanks!!!

Hey Bob,
I think this is a very practical solution.. it seems to be the best of a really bad situation 😉All my stuff was shot on Canons in 30F.. so there is no dec that I am aware of that will play it.. but they do sell the HV-20 that will display timecodes for about $800 (I’ve been told), so this is likely my best option. I’ve got an XL-H1 and XH-A1.. I really don’t want to use either of them for this.. it was bad enough I downloaded all the stuff to my MAC with them.
I’m ignorant on DVD Recorders, anything to look for or not look for?
Also.. my second dilemma has been transcription software.. it doesn’t really seem to exist. I’m a SW Engineer, I think it would be a WONDERFUL side business to develop something real as I don’t think it exists..though it would stop my film cold for the better part of a year developing it (so I aint gunna do it).. What do you use for transcriptions.. just a word processor? I’d love to know because I’ve only found one decent package written so far but its in Brazilian Portuguese.
I’m talking to the author of it.. I may get it translated. Thanks!

Hi John,
I’ve looked though compressor 3 and haven’t found any transcode options that will show timecodes.. is this what you are talking about?I know how to pull my video into a timeline pull a tc from the effects window and run compressor to another..but I need to do this on hundreds of hours and am looking for something that is less intensive from work that needs to be done on my side from my side.
I work a full time day job, so I can let it run from midnight until 6:00 PM the next day, so I should be able to render out about 2 tapes a day on a quad intel mac.. not great but I’m not seeing alot of alternatives right now.
What I want to do is make it the least work intensive that I can.. If there is a setting or something in compressor, could you let me know about it?
Also Transcription software? Are you aware of anything decent out there?
Many thanks.. Brian

Hi.. as I erroneously posted in the FCP DVD board by mistake, then here where it should have been, I am posting this (below) to both for the reasons stated below..

Hi All,
First thanks for the help, though no one guessed it, working in that direction did finally help me figure it out.Maybe someone can explain it to me, as I don’t quite understand it. I took a film clip of a sign where I was going to superimpose my titles below. As the camera bounced a bit when I shot the sign, I decided to slow it down in motion. I remember playing with forward speeds, reverse speeds, etc, just by manipulating the time curve in the graph. I thought I finally had arrived at a single stopped frame (basically, a photo). Well.. it didn’t like it, I played around with its alpha properties, and no setting appeared to work. I finally moved the title over another clip and “Voila!” I had a title. So I deleted the video clip of the stopped picture of the sign and did it a second time.. it worked.
One of my pet peaves is when someone posts a problem, people post help, and they never respond.. at least give feedback!
Thanks tons guys.. I really appreciate the help.
