October 13, 2009 at 2:21 pm in reply to: Maximum Document Size for Rastered Export

As I’m sure you know, not all client requests make sense…

I’ve tried opening through Preview, but it just doesn’t “work” if you know what I mean. The file is quite large and finder/preview seems to time out while processing. I’ve let it sit, but no avail.

I’ve tried opening the AI file (Illustrator CS3) in Photoshop (CS3) and I’m limited to under 200 inches in width, and the banner/billboard is 227 inches. So what Photoshop does is it opens as much as it can, then just cuts off what it can’t. And unfortunately, I can’t take part of it in “pass 1” and the other part in “pass 2” and then combine them – no way to do it since you can’t select the under 200 inch portion that you want to use.

I know there are PDF restrictions to size, so I guess there are JPEG restrictions in size as well… or else it’s an artificial limit by Adobe in CS3. Curious if there’s a limit in CS4…

October 2, 2009 at 1:34 pm in reply to: SD composition to HD export

You can attempt to “collapse transformations” by placing your SD comp timeline into a new HD comp timeline and check the results, however this does NOT work accurately for intense graphics and has problems with nested comps and 3D space placement. Really depends on what your project looks like.

  • off the bat, I do not believe QT “X” is supported. may need to go through the downgrade options with that – someone may have written an article/post on the how-to – I have not done this myself, so I can’t advise…

are you sure you projects are not corrupted? if this is happening on multiple existing projects, but NOT on new projects, then I would not rule out corruption.

you did not upgrade AI? so you have AE CD4 and AI CS3 or CS4?

also, you do not have a license for AI? this “MAY” be creating an issue when trying to import the AI files. do you NEW projects work fine when working with just footage or AE native elements?

did you wipe out ALL of the AI settings in the library before the install?

I do not know what the TRIAL limitations are without a serial number. This may be a question for Adobe.

are you doing a mechanical, programmed camera move?

  • I will ask the proverbial questions that will be needed to help out…

    System & Specs
    RAM
    OS Version
    Quicktime Version
    Plug-ins?
    Codecs of footage used

Does this happen on AE startup, or while working on projects?

Does this happen when loading a particular plug-in? (I’ve heard some plug-ins are not 10.6.x ready and need to be updated…)

When you did the Snow Leopard upgrade, did you “upgrade” or did you do a “clean install”?

When you reinstalled AE, did you remove ALL OF YOUR SETTINGS, LIBRARY ITEMS, etc. or did you just dump the APPS?

Running just AE, AE as part of production pack, AE as master collection?

Did you just reinstall AE, or everything Adobe?

Did you clone your OS disk prior to the install?

Speaking from previous experience (and why I am currently holding off on the upgrade), doing a CLEAN INSTALL is the only way I will EVER install an OS in the future. In fact, when I do upgrade to 10.6.x, I will be dual-booting my machine. Everything “works” now on 10.5.x, and I’d like to keep that as an option if everything starts to “not work” after an “upgrade”.

check to see your view / composite modes of the effect. many times the sapphire effects do not always default to preview the composite version and shows wireframes with controls for X, Y, and Z axis, or other controls to size, shape, etc.

September 11, 2009 at 7:17 pm in reply to: how do I open a windows AEP on a Mac AE v.9?

Depending on what you are actually working on within AE, I would also suggest you ask for a compression of the last version they are sending for own reference. Sometimes this helps if effects don’t properly transfer from one platform to another.

Another BIG deal is fonts. Again, not sure if you’re dealing with them, but a lot of times you will have to substitute them, even if the same font is installed on your machine. A quirk between different operating systems (and sometimes within the same OS environment) is that each machine will sometimes “see” the same fonts slightly differently, especially when dealing with fonts that have multiple family options. You’ll get the font error messages, but if you have a reference clip you can easily choose the proper substitute and just double-check everything lines up the way it should.

September 10, 2009 at 5:39 pm in reply to: AE CS3: RAM optimization

Jon – Thanks for your feedback. So far, I’ve been finding that when working and doing preview renders, I’m having luck with the disk cache enabled. Saves me some time when previewing long segments and making slight keyframe adjustments. I’m not really noticing a speed difference either way.

When rendering, I’ve been turning the disk cache off. I’ve had luck with this until last night when I got the dreaded “could not create image buffer” error. I believe this was due to the fact that it was one of the last renders of larger batch that I setup, and all of the caches were not purged prior to starting that render.

In the past I’ve had luck avoiding this issue on a batch render by setting everything up, saving the AE project, purging all the caches, quitting AE, restarting AE, opening the saved project, then starting the renders. For whatever reason, on a large batch render, this has been MUCH more successful than purging the caches alone. (This was not done prior to the image buffer error last night… go figure.)

August 31, 2009 at 4:20 pm in reply to: Kona 3 and OSX 10.6.x

[gary adcock] “Then why not ask these questions closer to time, since I can assure you there will be at least some updates and or changes by that time, as AJA is known to update current drivers on a regular basis along with the application updates.”

Yes, AJA has been good about updates in the past, but there have been problems with “major” OS upgrades for hardware that was not originally designed for the OS. I have not heard any Kona 3 user stories about the upgrades (until now), so I thought I would ask.

There is a chance the existing projects will finish before end of year, which would mean an earlier upgrade opportunity.

Also, I am exploring purchasing additional systems. Each would be a new MacPro that would come with OS 10.6.x pre-installed, so was wondering if there were issues because I’d hate to downgrade the OS with an old install disc – I would think that would create even more problems…
