I have been using FCP for 12 years now. I recently have made the switch to Premiere Pro. Although I like the features the mimic FCP, I’m still kicking and screaming a bit. I use AE so the switch seemed logical. I’ve always wondered about Avid because many folks in broadcast are still using it as staple. I’ve lost a gig or 2 because I wasn’t versed in Avid. But I do mostly web work for corporations and advertising and some local TV as well. I’m hopeful about Premiere Pro. But being an apple snob, I totally transitioned kicking and screaming. But I have been happy with the commentary by Adobe folks who are chiming in to the posts. It feels good to know they want the business and are looking out for the professional user. I’m wondering now where to go from here? Do I need to go even further into a Windows 8 system with Adobe or hope that Apple will continue to upgrade the Mac Pro. Any thoughts on this? I can purchase a 16 core PC tower with 64GB of RAM for a fraction of the cost… but I’m also using Thunderbolt via a LaCie hub to eSata on my mac.. What are you all thinking about hardware in the future?

Cool. Thanks so much for the feedback. Yeah I have a couple iMacs Quad i7. Great bang for the buck. 32GB Ram and now using a thunderbolt to eSata hub and I put a solid state boot drive in it. It does work great. Was workign in a post house in NYC last month and got teased a little for my iMac… but it totally performed without a hitch. My concern going forward is whether or not Apple is going to continue to produce MacPros and increase performance. But from what I’ve read, I’m no longer sure that they won’t eventually phase them out. Hence the Windows option. It kills me to go that route but as you said it’s a fraction of the cost for a PC tower with 64GB ram and 16 cores. My programmer buddy told me he was very happy with Windows 8 and that it has been rock solid…. but being a long time Apple user, I’m still skeptical. I know the new iMac is comign out this month.. or has. But yeah, be great to have a lot more felxibility in expansion and with video cards. Imported Red footage on a tower via Red Rocket card and transcoded to prores 1080p, wonder how the iMac would perform with 5K footage in PPRo..

I was talking to a programmer friend of mine whoe is based in australia and he told me this past weekend that he believes windows 7 and windows 8 have both been solid. I could pick up a real sweet PC for a fraction of the cost of a new macpro I guess. Maybe I’m too brainwashed by apple.. waiting to see if they will put interest in pro users or if they are really just trying to market consumers. Other friends I have are hopeful of Apple… I’m still in the decision mode as to whtehr I can count on them for support and innovation from a professional standpoint in the futre…

Thanks! Yeah, I’m moving over to PPro kicking and screaming. I’ve been using FCP for 11 years. But I see FCP dying a slow death and frankly I’m kinda po’d about that. FCPX, even with the latest upgrade has not produced anything close to the industry requirements managed by FCP7.. So I’m htinking, do I have with Apple to see if things come full circle and learn the interface of FCPX or do I migrate over to PPRO. Premiere Pro seems to have a lot fo features I like. And adobe seems to be caterign to the professional, that exites and comforts me. Now the big question, do I purchase a windows 8 system as my next editing workstation or stay with MacPro. Heard Apple was coming our with another MacPro offering next year.

cool thanks. It’s not possible to paste a portion of the assets? you just paste them all. I guess you can always delete later, etc… for example in FCP it launches a window for attributes that allow me to select which ones will be pasted.

Yes I recently downloaded the Luca light transitions and film fx. They basically only operate as composits. You need to add a composite mode (screen, etc) and then a fade in/out, etc or speed ramp or slow down to taste. Since I’m just switching over to Premiere, I saw that they had transition pluggins available for FCP 7.0, I have a project this week that is pressing and I remained on FCP for speed of use, so I purchased the FCP pluggins offered as “transitions” only to find that, even though they show up in FCP7.0 in the effects pallet, they still function as video to be composited. So I was kinda bummed that I purchased them again for FCP – even though they were labeled as non Premiere Pro compatible, yet they functioned identically to the versions that were Premiere Pro compatible, with the exception of having them show up in the effects pallet, instead of having to import.. which to me is practically no benefit at all.
