I’ve never experienced this and have 3 D comps that often have more than 100 layers.

The issue only occurs for me when I have a 2D layer (of any sort including nulls or adjustment layers) between my 3D layers. Could this be the issue? Some 3D effects must be applied to 2D layers in order to function correctly (shatter, CC particle world etc). Despite using the Comp camera these must not be between other 3D layers.

    Placing a 2D layer between 3D layers creates 2 separate 3D spaces.

  • Thanks for the info. I may have read this somewhere but had forgotten.

  • Make sure you get the correct RAM. The new MacPro require 800mhz FB DIMMS, I checked NewEgg and they only have the 667mhx ones advertised on-line.

  • Don’t order your additional drives from Apple. Intalling a drive takes about 2 minutes, no fuss they just slip in. Cost of a 500GB SATA retail is close to $100.

  • I agree. I currently have a MacPro Quad and have just ordered the 8 core. Spend the money on RAM but don’t buy it from Apple. Get the minimum, 2 GB from Apple and get your RAM from a reputable reseller. I ordered 8 GB from OWC for $399. I’v eused their RAM in my current system and its fine.

I had turned off OpenGL since it seemed problematic in general for AE and really doesn’t speed up my workflow.

Enabling it and setting AE to “OpenGL

I’m not sure what you’re after. Do you want the streaks to cast light on the 3D logo?

You could achieve this by duplicating logo layer, masking the upper one to reveal only the areas to be illuminated by the streaks and applying levels, glows etc a to the masked layer.

I’m not sure I understand your need either however you could use a point light and animate the intensity value. To add more realism to the scene you could use Levels or Curves to increase the brightness of the other objects in the scene.

If you’re trying to simulate a light beam or source you could use Peter Torpey’s Volume Light script. Or Trapcode’s Lux.

    Zax,

Thank you for your reply and excellent support. In fact I had set the faceting to .01 not .1 — a factor of 10 greater.

The product is great and I look forward to mastering it.

Again, thanks for the tech support.

I’m repeating the forst tutorial on Serge Hamad’s training DVD and have encountered the same slowdown as before.

Switching modes (camera to object) grinds the application to a near standstill. Just clicking on a the camera mode button causes After Effects to use over 100% of CPU according to the Activity Monitor — and it still won’t switch to the tool.

I saved and closed the project, when I reopened it the Use Comp Camera switch was on — though I hadn’t selected it. I uncheck it, saved the closed and reopened the project and the switch was on again???!??!
