[David Mathis] “Assigning roles in the Events Browse or in the Project:
One potential big time saver is to assign Roles to clips in the Event Browser prior to editing. This will ensure any Roles you choose to assign will apply to every instance of the clip edited into the Project (timeline). This same method can be used on multiple clips. It is important to know that a Role will be assigned to the entire clip not to part of clip as is possible wth keywords, favorites or rejects. You have to do this on the Event level, as Roles cannot be assigned on the keyword level. One nice benefit is that any changes made on the Event Browser level will not be made to instances of the clips already in the timeline. Clips in the timeline can be assigned a new Role as necessary without modifying other instances of the clips in the timeline or ones assigned on the Event Browser level. This can easily be verified.”
Dang I WISH assigning roles would ripple down to all instances. So much easier to apply roles in the browser than in a project. And let’s face it. We will eventually forget to apply the correct role to a clip. Why does X apply the role of “Video” to graphics? And why can’t it figure out that a wav file is music, unless of course it should be VO? 🙂 Does seem like a quick analyzing of the waveform could decide it’s music vs. VO (dialog).
BTW I have no problem applying roles to keyword collections. I highlight everything in my b roll keyword collection and give a role of B-roll. Same goes with graphics or SOT, etc. I certainly don’t try to do it at the event level with nothing is categorized.
[David Mathis] “Placing clips in the timeline using the Skimmer tool:
With the skimmer activated you can edit clips into the timeline as normal or as a backtimed edit. Really useful if you need to place a clip further down the timeline without having to change to the position tool. Only downside is you cannot assign in or out points in the timeline. Looks like another feature request!”
You can’t have it all. If you are back timing to the skimmer, then that IS your out point. Point 3 of a 3 point edit. The other two points are in the source clip. If you somehow wanted to also involve the range tool you’d have 3 points. In/Out and skimmer. You can certainly back time in an edit with the range tool, but it’s going to ignore the skimmer.
[David Mathis] “Range tool and spatial conform:
You have several photos, graphics, or video clips next to each other which have a different frame size (resolution) then that of the Project, only you want to choose a different setting then the default of fit. Use the range tool, make your selection, switch back to the selection tool and choose your new preference.”
Why are you using the range tool instead of just using the arrow tool to marquee select the clips? The range tool might work but if you’re trying to change the spatial to a bunch of clips, just marquee select, shift select, or cmd select them and change in the inspector.

Which means you were editing inside a clip. When you right click on a clip and choose “open in timeline” it should actually read “reveal clip contents.” But Apple doesn’t seem to know the difference between a timeline and a project, so I’m not surprised.

You don’t have a project. What you did is incorrect and you need to copy and paste the entire contents of that clip (you’re editing your show inside a video clip) and paste it into a project.

Top of my list is another update.

Yep. Their droplet is wrong. As is their language calling things 4:3 anamorphic. There’s no such thing. You don’t change a videos aspect ratio just because you make it anamorphic. It’s still 16:9.

They will not be center-cut or letter-boxed.I’d like to know how they’re gonna do that! This is an SD station, right?
-
True. Buy my point actually undercuts that and just jumps to the point that Resolve is still in its infancy and not ready for prime time. Perhaps in a place where it is truly being used for Online work. It just doesn’t have the performance and tools for creative work beyond color correction. Maybe this NAB we’ll see it get some integration with Fusion, some decent titling engine of sorts like X, and better use of the GPU or whatever they need to do to make playback useable.
And if you spend $1000, (or $500) wouldn’t you want the ability to use AJA? Seems fair. I understand they’ll give it to you free to get you to use their devices. Kind of like Apple. But if you’re buying it outright, then that thinking breaks down and it’s just an underpowered NLE that only supports 1 of the major IO device players. And one that recently is extremely flakey.

I would too. I assumed he was taking his 16:9 HD file and sending it to an SD TV station. In which case I don’t see how a droplet is going to work. You really need 3 droplets. My choice would be center cut, but that might cut off titles if you didn’t design for it. So letterbox would be the only across the board option-but letterbox looks completely stupid on an HD TV. However this droplet says anamorphic in the title of the droplet, yet the pixel ratio is set to square. It should be .844 not 1.25. Do TV stations even have a use for anamorphic? A broadcast TV station would have to downconvert anamorphic to letterbox on the fly, instantly removing the extra vertical resolution of anamorphic.
Our local PBS station has a SD and an HD feed. I used to work on a yearly GA Music Hall of Fame awards show for them and when we finally went HD with the show I discovered the hard way that their SD feed was nothing but a center cut of the HD feed. Not a letterbox. That would’ve been helpful info in the edit! All my HD title safe titles were cut off left and right on the SD feed. But hey, so were the titles on Dinosaur Train!
So, what do you want to do? Letterbox or center cut or anamorphic?

No it rendered 720×486. But it’s flagged 4:3 and not anamorphic. So it’s displaying it 640×486 which is 4:3 on a computer. It should display it 864×486. But in either case it would fill the 720×486 frame.
