Doesn’t HDV and DV have “data code” that tells what the fstop, gain, etc. was? Sounds to me like he had the gain up. My DSR-11 data code will tell the F stop, gain, shutter speed, time and date that it was shot. I’ll bet you’ll find the gain was up.

What would that make a change any more difficult than a nested effect? I doesn’t. Simply do the 15 mins of work again, or just fix the requested freeze frame. Seems easy to me.

    Have fun with it!

When you say Powermac, just what are you talking about? I assume G5, but I’m not sure. You say iMac earlier, but are you talking intel or ppc?

You say 1 30 DVD, but what kind of encoding? Are you using 1 pass CBR or 2 pass VBR? There just aren’t any arbitrary numbers here.

And if you’re exporting from the timeline, is it rendered? You can export an uncompressed timeline, but it’s got to render the timeline as it goes along, THEN compress the DVD.

And why did you say the real time output thing was “funny.” That wasn’t a joke he made. You buy a real time card like Kona 3. You hook up a DVD burner and press play. DVD done. No rendering (for most part) and no compressing. But my suggestion is that since you’re coming close enough to real time that a DVD burner / Kona would be a useless expense if you’re on ANY budget.

To me, the compressing of the DVD is kinda trivial. It’s the design of the DVD that takes days. Menus, interfaces, heirarchy, etc. So yeah, if you’re just burning client one-offs, go buy a burner. Me, I’m kinda embarrassed to hand a client a DVD with those computer-like burner menus. Drop it in a DVD SP template. And for that matter, just use DVDSP to burn it unless you need something other than the aiff audio.

    Lots of options here.

Second thought then, maybe nesting is not the right idea. A fast way to composite all those frames and pics is with freeze frames.

You’ve got them all laid out so you could simply put the playhead on each, and with an empty layer 1 (turned off just to be sure) press shift+n to make a freeze frame appear of the composite in the viewer. It should have an alpha. Make sure it works before you go do 50 of them.

If you set the still duration in user prefs to 7 seconds, it may make life even easier. Make your freezes and put them in a bin. Drag from a bin to the canvas window – overwrite with transition. Blamo. 50 dissolving photos with frame. Then, create the prescribed move on the first clip. Copy the clip, and then highlight the other 49 and do a “paste attributes” and just paste the motion.

I’m thinking the whole thing should take 10-15 minutes from import of the clips.

The nest has to be 7 seconds long. Not just what’s in the nest. If you’re laying it out on the timeline, layout the 7 seconds worth of photo/frame. Nest it. Then backup 2 seconds and put in the next photo/frame layers above that. Nest those. Then drag them down, over the nest below. Now can add the dissolve.

That is if I understand your issue right.

Other way would be to make 1 7 second nest with the prescribed move. Once you’ve made the move on it, you can trim it back to 5 seconds. Then just copy and paste it 50 times. Open each nest and replace the photo in the frame. Drag all the nests up into the canvas to overlay with transition to add the 50 dissolves, etc.

Or, the fastest rendering method. Merge all the pics and frames with photoshop. Import them all and basically use above methods without needing a nest.

Shake supposedly integrates just like Motion or LiveType. Isn’t it EOL’d?

I have the “evolution” total training vhs tapes if anyone is interested in bidding. 😛 Actually they’re pretty good. I was a little bummed that weeks after I bought the evolution plugins AE 5 (or was it 5.5) had them built in. Adobe had purchased them or bought the rights or something.

    Hey Richard,

Sounds like you just need to render those stills. Haven’t used the LH, but the IO is typical that way, especially if it’s not a perfectly formatted tif, psd, etc. like a jpeg of a bizarre size.

[Shane Ross] “Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.”

Your post is relevant, however that advice from Apple is a little dated. I notice the post began in Jan 1999! FCP was released in august or sept 1999. Strange. I wonder if it was updated to include FCP’s mention.

  • Hey Marcus, am I wrong or did you not say that you’ve got “make self-contained” checked off? That’s what your post said, but the use of commas was suspect.

Anyway, the answer is pretty obvious. It must be self contained. Otherwise you’re importing a reference movie. A movie that links to other movies. There’s no limit to what it could be referencing. FCP doesn’t support realtime reference files. Too many layers of data for real time. It’d have to access not only the quicktime file itself, but on top of that QT would also have to access it’s own reference. A sequence is essentially a big reference file itself.

Here’s hoping this helps, but I may have misunderstood your post.
