[Simon Ubsdell] “My problem is that I can’t see the virtue in the way that the Wheels behave in Rec.709, whereas in Rec.2020 they make complete sense and conform to what I would expect.”
This.
It makes no sense that Apple would want the color wheels to behave differently depending on which color space you’re using. I’d say this clearly identifies it as a “bug.” And as someone who has very little knowledge of color correction, there is no way I’d want to correct with the way it works in Rec.709. Of course I’m happily plugging away on the curves. I usually set my black and white levels with that as I can operate faster without having to switch interfaces. Though I know it’s better to just use the curves just for “shaping” for lack of a better term.

The problem is you claimed the Press Release was “blatantly false” without doing any actual research yourself. Was it a bit of puffery on Apple’s part. Of course, all PR statements are. But the “false” label should only be thrown out when you have actual proof that the claims AS THEY ARE WORDED are actually false. That includes different interpretations of what a “Hollywood film” means.
I think that is my primary objection with your reaction. You didn’t prove that what they said was “false”. Just a gut feeling I guess. A better response would have been, that it’s an exaggeration. Which I would have happily accepted.

[Oliver Peters] “Well sure, but if we are talking about X and not previous versions, then it’s a complete falsehood.”
So there are absolutely no “award winning Hollywood films” edited on X? Sometimes I’m amazed at how people misread things. You’ll note it doesn’t say “Oscar” or “Emmy”. And “Hollywood films” is a spongy term. I guess since it says “films” that would indicate a minimum of 2. I’m sure it probably is technically accurate and would not qualify as a “complete falsehood” as you claim.
It’s also a “from this to this” statement, highlighting the range of productions X is used for. So it doesn’t insinuate any sort of dominance in the Hollywood film industry.

[Oliver Peters] “However, in order for the new Optical Flow functions to work, this requires Metal 2,”
Does this mean Optical Flow won’t work at all unless you have High Sierra? What are the “new” Optical Flow functions?

Put in Movies:Motion Templates: Effects
You can adjust Scale and Position Parameters and then save an Effect Preset for each angle.

I’ve had issues with Optical Flow randomly just refusing to work on clips. It just continues to try and Analyze without ever completing. Given that the Flow transition uses Optical Flow I wonder if that’s what is going on. The only solution I’ve found is to go back to the Browser and replace the clip with a new copy and redo the speed changes.

November 30, 2017 at 1:41 pm in reply to: How are import resolution and export resolution related.[Evan Stanfield] “Fast forward to now. I am getting ready to go into a production and the same question applies (with new tech though). Will filming in 4k, importing in 4k and exporting from FCP at HD look better or the same as filming in HD, importing in HD, and exporting in HD.”
Yes you will almost always get sharper images with less noise and compression artifacts by downsampling 4K to 1080p. But as mentioned, resolution isn’t everything and different cameras look better or worse at 1080p. For example, I’d much rather be shooting on a Canon C100 MkII at 1080P than a Canon GX10 at 4K.
To bottom-line it, get the best camera you can, get 4K if you can swing it. Edit in 4K if your computer is up to the task. And export both 4K and HD.

I would jot down the parameters you use in FCP X. Then right-click in the Title Browser and select “Open in Motion”.
Then in Motion, select the “Project” layer at the top. Then Inspector / Project / Publishing. (See picture below)
Then enter your default parameters and save. That way when you grab it in the browser in FCP X, it will come in with those parameters. You could either save over your old template or even better “Save As” and give it a new name and custom “Category”
There are no “presets” for titles like there are for effects. I wish there were. But this method is a way of getting around that. You can save multiple versions of the same template named slightly different with different parameters.

[Joe Marler] “My 2017 top-spec iMac 27 does BruceX in 15.8 sec, and transcodes from 4k H264 to proxy about 2x faster than a 12-core D700 Mac Pro.”
The Mac Pro does a woefully poor job of decoding H.264. Since I’ve moved from an MPEG-2 to an H.264 codec for my camera (Canon C300 to C200). I’ve had to abandon the Mac Pro for an iMac and my 3 year-old Mac Book Pro. The Mac Pro is laggy playing back H.264 material, taking a half a second to even start playback. Whereas the MBP and iMac are instant. And frame refreshes when skimming are about 4X slower on the Mac Pro.
So if you use H.264 source media, I’d say avoid the Mac Pro.
