For me its not infrequent at all. I don’t know if things will get any better switching to High Sierra. But it’s a continual problem. Given that optical flow is used for stabilization, speed changes and flow transitions, it’s really become a workflow burden. And it’s not super easy to figure out which clip is the problematic one besides stepping through one at a time.

February 19, 2018 at 3:18 pm in reply to: Does C-Log from a C100 Mkii need to be transcoded?

No it does not. Just make sure in your clip information it is being interpreted as C-Log. The only reason to transcode is improved editing performance at a cost of increased storage space and time to transcode. I have found the trade-off not worth it. In no situation will transcoding actually improve image quality.

Largely I’ve switched to WideDR from C-Log. But when I shot occasionally in C-Log I found I often would rather control the exposure curve without interpreting as C-Log. Unless you’re really careful shooting it is easy to “over-expose” C-Log and get crushed highlights when applying the C-Log setting.

I don’t think he was saying the feature wasn’t there in Premiere. He was saying it just didn’t work reliably. So he’d have to upload manually.

[Shane Ross] “And I always, ALWAYS like to export masters in a high-end format, such as ProRes, for archiving. In case I need the master later for ANY reason (and typically I do…often). “

Yeah. This is REALLY easy with FCP X. I set up an export with MP4. Then do a Multitrack Quicktime with audio roles and no titles for archive. Get my MP4 upload to FB and/or Youtube and then by the time I’m done with that, I have my Multitrack Quicktime for archive which I can re-edit into other pieces because I can control the audio tracks.

I tend to not lock in an organizational structure, which separating into different events does. So I use one event. That way when you do a search it has the possibility of pulling everything up with that keyword/date/etc.. Versus having to bounce between different events using the same search. But I don’t work on feature films. Which I think dividing it up into different events may speed up the program a bit.

In the browser I group by Creation Date or Camera. For smaller projects I tend to find things with just a visual search. But for bigger projects If I need more tools to narrow down my footage, I tend to use the Smart Collections to do it. Such as showing only media from a certain camera and/or showing media from a certain day. Sometimes I just leave up the Smart Collections parameter window and dynamically change the filtering parameters

You can try Sonnet drivers. Even if your card is not a Sonnet it might have the same chipset. Find the card that is the closest match here and give it a shot: https://www.sonnettech.com/product/computercards/index.html

January 9, 2018 at 7:29 pm in reply to: How can my client A/B audio tracks remotely?

You could also use Roles to export two separate audio tracks with a Multi-track Quicktime Export. (Under options when you export Master File).

Then in VLC you can use the Audio menu to switch between the audio channels you exported.

January 5, 2018 at 9:58 pm in reply to: Is there a CONSOLIDATE feature in FCP X?

I think the main reason for your troubles is that all your powerpoint images are in a Secondary Storyline. That means they will stay locked together at the connection point no matter what you do to the Primary Storyline where you are likely making your timing edits.

You might think about taking everything out of the Secondary Storyline at this point. Select the clips and then Cmd+Opt+Up Arrow. Or “Break Apart” This will lock each individual slide to the person talking. You’ll have to futz around a bit where you make the edit, but things down the line won’t change. Or multiple smaller Secondary Storylines would be more manageable.

January 5, 2018 at 9:04 pm in reply to: More regarding the New X Color Tools…

[Oliver Peters] “This is a nice, basic demo, but I don’t know why the addition of curves should be all that exciting. After all, what was added and what is being demoed by Mark and Steve is something that’s been around in various applications for about 2 decades. However, it does point to the fact that Curves is probably to most useful addition Apple made. Plus, it does seem like the processing is correct, as opposed to the Color Wheels.”

Nothing earth shattering. But I’m working better and faster doing color correction than I ever have in X. To use curves before, you either had to get ColorFinale or more recently Chromatic. Either case required you to open a window on top of your interface. And everytime I switched clips I had to reopen. Some have said it should stay open, but that was never my experience.

And the curve window in ColorFinale was too small to make fine adjustments. Also the Hue-Saturation curves in the new color tool work really well. That only existed recently in ColorFinale and I found it didn’t work the way I expected it to. Apple’s tool does.

Also the addition of White Balance adjustment in the Color Wheels section saves me from having to use another plug-in.

Once they fix the Color Wheel luminance adjustment, it’s going to be really solid.

  • Let me just say, I appreciate your thoughtful and knowledgable investigation of this. I can’t understand why anyone would think differently.
