Storage is cheap, shrinking the files is a really bad idea.
Buy a 2 to 300 dollar hard drive and get more storage.

To make a major difference in size you’d have to compress them by at least 4 or 6:1 which is going to really degrade the Video Quality. This will be especially noticeable if you are going to pull stills from it.

  • Yeah and what’s even worse is Metal and OpenCL don’t work either.
No matter what I select AME 2018 always says Software only when encoding.

It may be time to think about abandoning Apple but I’m going to slit my throat if I have to use Windows.

What Bit Rate are they asking for, for the Video.

The OP-1a’s that Avid exports are identical to the Sony OP-1a Specs which are 50mb Video with 8 channels of 24 Bit Audio.
There’s also the Sony 35mb Spec which allows 16 Bit Audio but that’s usually with a maximum of 4 channels of Audio.

What I have found in the past when I received a spec sheet like you did is that by contacting the (in my case broadcaster) was that there specs were incorrect and had to be revised. They actually did require 24 bit Audio.

If they insist on an Op-1a with 50mb Video and 16 Bit Audio then you would have to re-encode it in something like Adobe Media Encoder.

Your setting your output to 5.1 so that’s all you will get out of Avid.
Also under no circumstances should you use 16 bit, 44.1khz Audio.
It should always be 24 bit, 48khz, 44.1 is for music not Broadcast or DCP’s.
I would also possibly setup your Timeline as a 7.1 Track or 8 Mono Tracks before outputting it.

I agree that AutoSync by Waveform can be a bit of a pain and it can also be slow.
I always sort my footage by TC and sync in pairs when I get good or reasonably accurate TC.

As for Perf Slipping I always turn on 4 Perf Slipping.
If the TC is good I AutoSync by TC and then Perf Slip.
If the Audio Guy always starts rolling before the Cameras and Stops after the Cameras then Perf Slipping is a breeze.
We always discuss this with the Audio Guys Pre Production and they generally are pretty good about doing so.

You are very clear and if English is not your Native Language you wrote a very easy to understand Post. I think your English is better than mine actually.

Only Version 3 of PluralEyes works with Avid not Version 4 and I would stay away from creating new files. Actually stay away from PluralEyes altogether especially with Avid. You will have relink issues with both your Video and Audio. Especially if the Audio is going to a separate mix outside of Avid and you create new files. The Audio guys will want the Original Audio and there will be no link back to any of it. I really find PluralEyes to be less than great, even with Premiere. It always brings in random Master Clips which then need to be sorted through and cleaned up.

If your using a newer version of Avid it has AutoSync by Audio Waveform, you could use that or sync manually. You could also create Stacks then Sub Clips from the Stacks. Once all the Sub Clips are done just right click on them and select AutoSync. You will now have Synced A/V Clips.

Stick with your original workflow. Transcode everything in Resolve to OP-Atom files and just make sure that your Conform Options are setup so that the Reel/Tape Column is Populated. I’ve included a screen shot of the settings I use most of the time. Especially for Cameras that don’t have Embedded Reel/Tape Metadata.

  • Usually it’s greyed out if they were imported instead of AMA Linked although I’ve run into issues with Avid just plain refusing to let me Relink to AMA Linked files. I really hate AMA and just plain avoid it unless it’s for 1 or 2 clips here and there. I will then either transcode them or do video mix downs so I don’t have to deal with the constant relink issues.

I believe that the “Relink to Files” was changed somewhere between 8.4.5 and 8.7.2 but I don’t remember exactly which version it was. Avid completely changed all there menus and right click menus at some point after 8.3.x that confused the hell out of a lot of us for awhile.

If your on a Mac I’ve had success in some cases going to ~/Shared/AvidMediaComposer/AMA Management Folder and moved the Folder to my desktop that pertains to the Bin your having issues with. Just don’t trash it until you know for sure that removing it from there doesn’t cause other issues.

If your on a PC I’m not sure where it’s located.

  • Right click on the Clip or Clips and select Relink to Files….

That will open up a dialogue box that will allow you to navigate to the folder where your clip or clips reside.

There can be playback issues In Premiere but they shouldn’t be that severe.
Have your setup the Mercury Engine setting to OPEN CL since you have and AMD GPU.

  • I haven’t done this from a timeline but generally when you want to transcode the entire clip(s) just set the handles to 0. It’s been a while because I do all my Transcoding in Resolve but I seem to recall that’s the way to do it.
