  • Hey Pat, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I always have the 422 option ticked, and really try not to go over 235 but realized slight overages are sometimes allowed. Usually I use it as a hard clipper per sequence, not on the entire show- but I still realize that isn’t ideal. I find premiere’s fast color corrector works extremely well- and I was wondering if there was a way of making Avid’s tools work in a similar way, but I think they are just very different beasts.

If I have to grade each clip before using the limiter, is there any reason why I wouldn’t just legalize each clip while I’m grading?

  • Not sure specifically about this render issue, but here are a few general tips I use in overcoming render errors and crashes.

    1. Try creating a whole new project, opening the bin and then rendering out. Sometimes this is enough to fix render issues.

    2. Similarly, you can also create a new sequence- load your old sequence into the source monitor and drop everything into the new one. It’s simple, but it has fixed errors for me in the past.

    3. Try a combination of 1 &2.

    4. Export out your sequence in chucks by either breaking them up into sub-sequences or using the ‘Use Marks’ setting in the export settings. This will let you diagnose exactly which part of your sequence contains the problematic clip or error. Once you have found the problematic part, you can fix it and try rerendering our OR simply assemble the clips you rendered out in Final Cut or something and it should go pretty fast.

Thanks for the suggestion- I checked, but the folder and inclosed items have full read and write permissions.

I am currently working on a new MacPro usin Avid 7. I had some issues when installing because there was no audio out driver so I had to install a virtual driver (wavtap) for avid to launch. After that, everything worked fine.

To answer your question about HDMI- I currently have a Samsung HDTV hooked up straight from the HDMI out and it is working perfect, but you could also use a display port adapter in the thunderbolt slots and it would work fine. My other two monitors are Display Port to VGA.

What I suggest you try is transcoding on a lower resolution codec like DNxHD 45 MXF, doing your edit and then when ready batch import your final sequence at your DVCProHD to do color correction and final export. This way the editing should be faster and you should have overall better performance but not sacrifice on quality- just a couple extra steps.

If this still does not work, it could be your graphics card. Mine has 1gb of memory and I still experience the occasional slowdown when doing multicam.

That’s really a tough one. Avid’s crash errors are never really all that helpful. This might sound like an extreme solution, but have you tried a complete uninstall and reinstall of Avid? If you do that and the error persists then it will point to a hardware/system error.

Off the top of my head I can’t think of what might be causing this. If you hadn’t transcoded your clips it might have been that. My guess is it is the multiangle view taxing your system.

Have you tried lowering the quality of your preview? You can do this by clicking the green/yellow box at the bottom left of your screen.

Can I ask the specs of the computer you are working on?

  • Yeah I’ve already found some issues when clients bring in footage from Canon DSLRs – If I know ahead of time I will always import instead. The downside to my current workflow is I will be faced with unexpectedly slow footage from time to time.

    Thanks pointing that out!

For the titles, with your sequence open, you can go to Clip > Recreate Title Media This should recreate the media for the 3 titles you are missing.

If relinking is greyed out I would suggest going into your bin, right clicking the clip and select ‘Batch Import’ – here you can select the clip in your file system. Are looking at the proper ‘Relink’? – Because there is ‘ReLink’ and ‘Relink to AMA File’ and they are not the same.

As far as what might be causing persistent unlinking… are you working on an external hard drive? If so, what kind? USB? Thunderbolt? ESATA? It could be your hard drive is failing and Avid isn’t picking it up when first opening the program.

I believe it is the AMA linking that is causing the slowdown. I usually work in a similar way as you do and have experienced slowdown by AMA linking clips coming from DSLR’s.

You could try importing the footage, or transcoding what you have already done and playback should go back to being smooth.
