I don’t Get it, the render times seem ok. This test is 3 clips HDV with dissolves, takes about 7 minutes for a 1:24 clip. I just wonder if it could be faster. Program seems to edit fine, I’m very happy there.

    And to show disk

Thanks so much for chiming in here. I have made 2 changes at the same time, so I don’t have a good feel for what to expect. I upgraded to Vegas Pro 10 from Studio 10, and I bought a new i7 2600 3.4g with 8 gig ram.
Here is my test. New session, 1920x1080i 29.97.
Import clip from my HDR-FX1 HDV camcorder.
Import a clip on 2nd internal Sata drive duration 00:01:24:24
( I will be adding more SATA Drives this week )
Render to AVC 1920x80i M2ts. To internal Boot SATA, or render to external USB drive.
(as soon as new drives arrive this will be replaced)

    Render time 7:07
Cpu usage very low20% or less, when I look at threads
I see 0,2,4 show about 20%, Drive usage is a series of spikes of only 3meg sec, Free mem is listed at about 5 gig.

One question I have is under the Preview window is says project settings
1920x1080i 32 and same for preview. My camera is 12 bit, but I’ve looked around pretty good and I can’t find anything set at 32 bit.
I’ve even selected project settings match media ( HDV)Is this the problem?
Thank you so much again, something still doesn’t feel right.

I started over with all the new settings and started a fresh project, and my render times seem good.
Timeline to AVCHD seem to be about 3:1 which feels pretty good to me.
(1 minute time line = 3 minute render). (it had been taking about 25 minutes for a 2 minute timeline)
I did have a mp3 music bed in the project that extended under black and that doen’t seem to render fast so I might try replacing that with an AVI. My cpu usage, disc and RAM in task manager still seems low (20% cpu)but my render time seems good, so I’ll move on with the project.
    Thanks for your help.

I believe that is what I am doing, putting HDV and AVCHD in a time line and rendering my project to AVCHD. I am not pre rendering anything.
If my render times are long, and I see low CPU, RAM, and Disc, usage it seems to me Something else is wrong. I see many threads on this issue that refer to the following…. Setting threads at 8 not 16,Setting pre-render ram at 0, use CPU not GPU to render. I have read many threads on this issue. I thought maybe I missed one and there was a setting I missed, because I found bits and pieces in different threads.
    Thanks again

But under any circumstances shouldn’t cpu usage exceed 20%.
It was a test, the project will be mixed HDV and AVCHD footage so in that case rendering would involve converting codecs.
Today I am being same getting the system up to snuff before I start the project.
    Thanks

And I tried render with CPU only, looked like a minor increase, peaked at 23% max.
As well I have a very simple project, no plugins, 4 edits with dissolves, one video track, one extra audio track near end ( mp3 )
This piece is very very simple. Shot 1080i HDV, render to AVCHD. It is 2 minutes long and takes about 25 minutes to render.
    Thanks again

    John and Steve
Thank you! Like I said just wanted to ask in advance.
I might upgrade to pro, I did just upgrade from 10 to 11 studio to tweek performance with AVCHD, but was disappointed to see Studio doesn’t take advantage of the extra ram in a 64 bit system.
It would have been nice if Sony listed that fact in their nice little comparison chart they have listing all the Vegas versions.
Anyway I really appreciate being able to ask these questions before I make any more purchases, and more important when I’m not trying to finish a project.

Thanks so much! I will continue installing.
I’ll try to get one more question before I start here, so I don’t become one of those posters with lots of exclamation points.
I have used Vegas Studio Platinum 8 and 10 with HDV Files on my old dual core with no problems. Now I need to work from a 2 camera shoot. I would prefer to go AVCHD on the second camera (because I am purchasing this camera and want to get off tape)
I am upgrading to Vegas Studio Platinum 11.
Do you think an i7 2600 3.4 GHZ will handle AVCHD and HDV for simple cuts, dissolves and titles?
OR should I use a proxy codec? or can I just work with the AVCHD and HD.
Or would you suggest I just get a Cannon HV40 HDV camera, and avoid the AVCHD issue all together.
I’m a bit of a pest with this question I know, but I’m trying to get a feel for what I am facing before I buy the second camera, and before I shoot.
Thanks Again, you expertise is really appreciated!

Thank you for your help. You are correct I meant TM7000. I assume you use The Black magic to capture real time and avoid the tape to disk transfer time, but does that codec help as well? Is it less load on the computer compared to editing two AVCHD streams or more important AVCHD and HDV? and one last question, do you use AVCHD for you project settings?
    Thank You again!

    September 19, 2011 at 12:15 am in reply to: AMD Phenom II x4 3ghz? + AVCHD ?

OK So the lack of response inspired me to purchase an i7 2600 3.4 gig
with 8 gigs ram, Win home premium 64 bit ( which I may upgrade to pro ). I plan on using 3 SATA drives, 2 for PB of a and b roll, one to render to.
If I am using this system will AVCHD and HDV be usable? ( Few effects, some titles )
I still can’t clearly judge if Vegas STUDIO takes advantage of 64bits. ( will it use the full 8 gigs of Ram? )
I haven’t bought my second camera yet, I was going to purchase a tapeless AVCHD but I could get a Cannon HV40 and stick to tape is editing is going to be miserable. Should the project settings be hdv or AVCHD?
Thank you so much for your time, and expertise!
