It depends on what edit software and what kind of layers and filters you apply as to how much you “degrade” your original footage (if at all.)But your original question was about archiving footage.
DV is already 5-to-1 compression.
There’s no point in archiving to a file that destroys the quality.
Just keep the TAPES… they are fine for archival purposes, small, full-quality and you can just load them back up and capture the footage again, if needed.
Heck, many places back-up to DAT cassettes… DV is nearly the same size as those and you don’t need to do anything but put them on the shelf.

DV directly transfered.
DV tape sent over FW to a DV file on the computer = zero additional compression.
Its just a “numbers” file-transfer.

SONY claims that you can reuse DV tapes over 200 times without any dropouts.
I’ve never had any trouble with reusing any DV tape (the cheapest of the name brands work perfectly for me).
I have video “work tapes” that get constant use and re-use… no drop-outs, no problems.Every time I see the reply to NOT do it (or only do it a very few times) I just shake my head.
Video folks get very nervous and superstitious about these things, I guess.The cautionary tales get told and re-told so much that they finally become “common knowledge” (EVERYBODY KNOWS you shouldn’t re-use DV tapes). Kind of an “Urban (Video) Legend.”

I still don’t understand the problem.
I do this kind of remote recording/direction all the time.
Just have the person record to a “good audio setup” AS YOU LISTEN TO HIM/HER OVER THE PHONE.
They would just have the phone reciever held up to their head as usual, but would also be speaking into a good mic that was feeding a computer’s “recorder.”
After you were satisfied, the other end could send you the sound file over the internet via email.
The device you linked to will not help much, and you’d need someone on that end to set it all up…
have that person instead set up to record to a computer.I still say the best bet is to do thios, but do it at a RECORDING STUDIO… they can do the phone-patch stuff (so you can HEAR and DIRECT).

A quick workaround is to put a Slug or a Black Color Matte on the video layer ABOVE the clip in question and add a dissovle to it or ramp its opacity up or down.

Your basic computer is just fine.
How are you capturing?
Internal HD?
Do you use a second internal drive for capture and render (and not the drive with the OS and FCP app on it?)

1. Don’t do it “over the phone” (its not possible, anyway).
2. You could record to an audio file on a computer and then email that file.
3. You could be LISTENING and directing over the phone (but not recording that way for Actual USE.
But getting a hih-quality mic connected and setting up the proper acoustic conditions in an office
will be problematic.4. To save thousand hassles and poor-quality results, have the person go to a local recording studio where the tech there set it up to allow you to moninor and direct the session over the phone.
5. Then the recording tech can burn a CD of the session and overnight it, or, if time is very critical, email you the files.
There are DSL links, of course, but if you don’t have one, the above mehtod(s) will work for you.

If this is the problem, don’t use a Canon unit as your “deck.”
Use anolther brand of camcorder or deck instead.
I have bought many home video camcorders (Sony & Panasonic) from Pawn shops for around $125 or so.
Be sure and try playing a tape that was recorded on your Canon on any unit that you are looking to buy.
