Sorry, but that’s about the size of it.
Once its clipped, YOU’RE clipped.Use this as a reminder that, when recording video with sound, if your eyes are looking at the viewfinder, you ears need to be listening to headphones.
I can’t tell you how many times, even with a “sound-check” before the event, the audio gets “fixed” by someone being “helpful” during the shoot (or the cable comes loose, or the mic falls down, or…)
Even more than VIDEO, many things can go wrong with the AUDIO that just can’t be fixed in post.

Just for further info:
mp3 files will NOT play properly even if RENDERED in FCP.
(Its not just a “convenience” thing.)
They MUST be converted to AIFF 48 kHz (best choice) before they are imported to FCP or they will “hesitate” and “drop-out ” during play. -
On many Powerbook/iBook systems you can loop the FW device (camcorder or deck) through the Hard Drive on a singe FW400 port.
And/or, if you can get the FW800 port to WORK on either the deck/camcorder OR the HD, then there is no “downside” to doing so.
You can try either of these methods on your Mac and see which works best.

You say the “tracks are not mixed”.
But, there will be no visible or audible “change” after an “Audio Mixdown”.
It merely creates a SINGLE rendered stereo audio clip that is easier for the Mac to play than multiple shorter clips.Again, YOU won’t be able to tell any difference after a mixdown but FCP can.
(If you can’t mixdown, then that means is already been done.)

COMPRESSION (which makes low-level sounds louder, and higher peaks lower) is is exactly the OPPOSITE of what you want with “noisy” tracks.
If the track is CLEAN, David’s suggestion of “tuned-EQ compression” is a good technique, but with background NOISE already present on the track, it can actually increase the problem.
EXPANSION is the effect you need to reduce background noise (somewhat). It makes “foreground” audio more pronounced, and drops “background” signals lower.
Simple versions of both of these filters are included in FCP, but it takes a very cautious application of either.
“Expander/Noise Gate” Audio Filter is the one to look for.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

I’ll let others comment further about maximum effective FW cable length.

Our SE800’s output from a FW input looks identical to the direct camera output.

I have used the Bogen/Manfrotto and Varizoom zoom controllers and they work perfectly for zoom and focus on my PD150s.
The Zoe controller’s focus works with the Sonys.
I have never found a LANC controller (designed for Sony) that did not work with focus on any Sony with a built-in lens (but some functions on OTHER BRANDS may not work).The thing to consider, though, is that under live conditions those kinds of controllers (any brand) are not very fast or convenient for FOCUS use (Zoom is great).
In fact, ANY manual focus with these “infinite-spin” focus rings on the built-in lenses is “hit or miss” under the best conditions.
The good news is that the auto-focus is so GOOD on the PD150/170 that under most conditions I leave “auto” ON (with great results) and just worry about framing/zooming with the remote, and IRIS (which must be controlled directly on the camera body). -

In “real” football coverage, there are live engineers operating with full remote-control over all the aspects of the cameras.
They “shade” the cameras iris and black-levels constantly, and can manually compensate of color-balance.In more “basic” productions without these benefits, you can:
A. leave cameras in “auto-WB” (not so good)
B. ignore WB (worse)
C. regularly, carefully re-WB all cameras during breaks in the game (best you can do). -
