    John,
Sorry about being a jerk, nothing personal to anyone.

BUT, (and this is why i bitched, and is not aimed at you)

These fora are HIGH on Google, so people will read posts and use the info years from now.
(My webstats tell me i get visits on my site from links in posts made several years ago)

So it is not a good idea to pump too much incorrect / incomplete information in here. But that happens way too much to my taste.

At least put in a few AFAIK or IMHO’s in postings if unsure.

And yes, i’m guilty as charged as well, but do my best to set things straight where possible.

    peace,

    Bouke

    eeer, Anna,
If you have your material (although in offline) in Avid, you can use Automatic Duck to get offline media into FCP.
Then, (If you have shot XDcam disks, not EX or alike), you can use my tool to batch ingest.

    [Anna Fuller] “xdcam mp4’s”
Huh? It’s MXF that gets converted to QT…

[Anna Fuller] “In the meantime I may revert back to the old tape way of doing things, it’s just very render intensive”

Huh? If you use a deck over 422 / SDI, you can ingest to a nice RT codec. No added render time compared to file based ingest.
This is Sony, they give you the opportunity to use file based media like a VTR (at a price)

And in the time this thread is alive you could have done 12 hours worth of show…

But for the future, do have a look at Automatic Duck and my tools…

[Shane Ross] “FCP looks at reel name, start and end timecodes of the media. If they don’t match, FCP won’t see it.”

    Shane,
    This is NOT true.
FCP (at least version 6 i’m using right now) looks at FileName and Reelname.
If those are correct, it will look at start and end TC.
If the expected TC is within the clip boundaries, FCP WILL link to it. So you can link to other files than the originals.

If TC boundaries or Reelname does not match, other weird stuff may happen.
(Fcp can also link to files with same filenames but other Reenames.)

And this is getting quite interesting and important!
Currently i’m developing an application that can compare and rename files.
IOW, with that you can have a proper relink and/or consolidate funcion based on TC and Reel info only.

This is not going to do her much good.
The way it is now, there MUST be media present, as the extract tool uses QT as input, instead of XML or alike.

I could make an XML parser, but so much to do, so little time…

And i believe that Automatic Duck can do the transfer WITH media.
If so, you could use my online tool to extract the HQ XDcam files.

If that’s the case, i stand corrected.
(And indeed it makes some sense, the XDcam transfer tool has a setting allowing you to extract material without codecs installed. I should have known.)

Also makes sense as the codecs are MpegII based, thus always non-free (although someone else may pick up the bill)

But on the other hand, if the codecs come with FCP, what’s the problem then? Anyone should have them installed…

    ooops…

Sony codecs come with Avid, and for FCP you have to install the XDcam tranfer application. From memory, they come with that.

    Andy,
Mea Culpa, that should be ‘Will’

    As for checking Gamma issues:
My trick is to create (or aks the one that wants to deliver files to me) a small QT with three vertical bars, pure black, grey (123, 123, 123) and pure white.
(whatever anyone thinks that should be pure black and pure white)

With any half decent waveform it’immediatly clear if you have gamma issues or not, and how to compensate for it, as well as compensate for RGB vs StudioRGB vs YUV levels.

[John Pale] “Why is this so much funnier when its coming from Zelin.”

    John,
That’s cause Zelin is a sissy who intends no harm….

    Shane:
Uncompressed ‘should’ work on any PC with QT installed, IF the default Apple Uncompressed is used.
However, there are a lot of flavours on Uncompressed, as a lot of hardware vendors make their own ‘uncompressed’variant, and that will get you in trouble if you use that.
Besides, there are Gamma issues using Uncompressed. (I do not know for sure if that is also the case with ProRes, but i bet a box of beer it is.)

    John,
Animation and Photo-Jpeg also got Gamma issues. Besides, if you advice Animation, also advice to set it to 75%, more is overkill as it creates 4:4:4 files at 100%

    Andy,
    Avid codecs, gamma issues.
Except the MpegII codecs, but those are not in the free codec package.

    Alex,
    My advice:
XDcam codecs seem not to suffer from gamma issues, are compact and free, and come with Avid.
For those who cannot deal with that, just give them a tape.

This thread now contains so much bullshit that i’m not capable to comment on anymore, as i want to go to bed within an hour.

(And if this sounds insulting to some of the posters, no worries, it was intended that way. I’ll pick up the fight tomorrow.)
