Just learned to use the mask effect in premiere – it is great – and easy to work withc. It will help with some of the things I have been working with. Also parts of the picture that is overexposed. You want to get a part of the picture lighter and another part darker. Then put to Lumetri effects on the clip – one for the hole picture and one for the light or dark part. Use the mask drawing in top of the effect . Its beside an oval and a box – formed like a pen. Click on that and you can click a mask around the part you want to lighten or whatever effect you want to work with. There is also some tools like feather to soften it up. It is great to work with! Often the picture is not overexposed in black and white but it is only colours that looks strange when they are very bright. Try to find the tutorialn you tube.
