Okay, thanks for bringing me up to speed, Ty and others. I’ve ordered the rode VMP and that new adapter and I’ll see what I find out when they arrive.
Thanks again, gentlemen.

Great, thank you!
Just to confirm: With this adapter, there’s no reason this condenser shotgun mic shouldn’t work with my T3i?
The only reason I ask for reassurance is because I’ve been frantically googling the morning away, and the consensus seems to be that such microphones require a preamp of some sort to work. Is this only the ones that don’t have built in batteries?
I just want to make sure before I cancel my videomic order and snag this -considerably cheaper- adapter solution.
Thanks for the input thus far. I really appreciate it and look forward to learning more.

Hello, Ty
I’m unsure of the mic model but it’s about 16″ long and probably a 4-5 years old. Has an XLR output on the back and a battery switch.
This is the cable I ordered.
I didn’t notice until now that it says it’s for a Sennheiser transmitter.
Incidentally, I’ve overnighted a rode videomic pro, as I need to shoot something on Friday, but I’d sure like to get to the bottom of this stuff for future reference.

Great, thanks. I’ve installed a battery but it still doesn’t seem to come up. I did a bit more digging and it seems like I may be out of luck without investing in a phantom power block or an external recorder like a zoom h4n.
Can anyone confirm that my DSLR will not work with a condenser shotgun mic running on battery power only?
I may just have to order a rode videomic and have it overnighted.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Follow up on this –
Along with – what I’ve now determined is – the free version of flip4mac, a program called Sorenson Squeeze was also installed on this machine. It seems to do exactly what I need to do.
Thanks

Thank you for the reply, folks. This is all a little muddled but…
I discovered that the last producer here already had flip4mac installed on this bay. I purchased QT pro and managed to convert my mov to wmv however, and I’m sure those familiar with this process know what I’m about to say, it’s only 30 seconds long.
Is this the limitation of QT pro, the reason I need to (correctly?) use another plug-in, or a settings issue that I haven’t stumbled upon yet? If it’s a plug-in issue, how exactly do I use the flip4mac plug-in correctly? When I run the program is just launches plain old quicktime which gives me no conversion options.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It seems that my settings won’t save when I put them in. I turn on progressive and 30p but when I change something or power down the camera it reverts back to being off.
Back to the manual, I guess.

Hey, Oliver
Thanks for the explanation – that makes sense. After reading your reply, I perused the camera’s menus (again), before eventually consulting the online manual. I finally found the menu option to set the frame rate and turn on progressive footage.
I shot some new sample footage at 30p, and it captured perfectly, as 1 clip with no dropped frames, within FCP X.
Hopefully this will continue to be the case moving forward.
I sincerely appreciate the input from each of you.
Happy holidays!

Good morning, gentlemen. I thank you for your replies.
Timothy,
I tried the camera archive method. It seems like a neat workflow concept and it did produce better results than experienced initially but there were still issues of dropped frames and fragmented clips.
Oliver,
I’m not sure I have the knowledge to address your suggestion entirely, but I can confirm that the footage is imported as 29.97i – whether or not FCP X conforms it during the import process, I’m unsure. I did also try and manually set the project to 24p and then import the media but it was not suitable.
Mark,
I was a little perplexed by it as well. My first suspicion was that the tape was damaged or I botched something during shooting, but when it worked fine in Avid, that seemed to indicate otherwise. I will play around with the capturing functions in quicktime and may just need to find the most streamlined process of capturing with something else, then importing to FCP X.
Other than this issue, working in FCP X has been a delight thus far. I hadn’t really used it professionally prior to my job here, so I was a little bit nervous about recommending the switch to a program that I’d only played around with in my spare time, but so far I think it’s going to be perfect for my needs here.

Thank you for the reply, Theo.
Overlap automatically wasn’t selected in the editing section. I did select it for future reference.
What’s really vexing is that within the same video project, it will work for some joints and not for others.
So, lets say I have 5 clips that are all snapped together with no overlap or transitions. I drop the spin transition between the 1st and 2nd clip, and it automatically does the overlap and looks great. I’ll move onto the splice between clips 2 and 3, drop the transition in, and nothing happens. Not until I go and manually do the overlap, which has created some potential audio and consistency issues, will it allow the transition to function properly.
I know my boss has a copy of excalibur somewhere. I will try and get that installed tomorrow.
Thanks again for the reply, sir.
