July 12, 2017 at 7:24 pm in reply to: Resources that explain why video/motion graphics “require” a powerful computer? Thanks, folks! I provided them with some info and I think we might be out of the woods. I told them that I could definitely get by for less and I think effectively conveyed why video editing is taxing for a computer system.

April 10, 2017 at 12:04 am in reply to: Making a background image a bit more dynamic/interestingThank you kindly, Dave! I checked out that effect and while I found it cool, this spot is kind of upbeat and corporate/acoustic so I was hoping for something a bit more bright and subtle.
Any other suggestions? Sorry if my description remains a bit ambiguous.

All of this advice is GOLD. Thank you, gentlemen. I’m going to take some more time to read through it but the first order of business is getting an on-camera light on order and bamboozling our social media lady into doing some field interviews.
Thanks again. I’ll check back between now and the show.

December 9, 2016 at 12:49 am in reply to: Approximate cost of creating a 12′-24′ studio space?Nick and Mark,
I can’t thank you gentlemen enough for taking the time to reply. I apologize for the delay in responding. There are a lot of things going on at work but this project is still in the works (hopefully). I’m going to marinate on all of the information a bit, and definitely catalog it for when we hopefully get to the decision making stage.
To give a bit more information, we will need to record live audio in this space. The parking garage is in the basement, only a couple of our executives park there, and it’s usually quiet all day.
Fortunately, I do have some equipment and lighting, a handful of C-stands and clamps from the previous regime. We have a decent 5 piece ARRI tungsten kit with a softbox. I have a GH3, a single wireless LAV kit,and a nice manfrotto tripod.
The content will vary a bit. Talking head stuff, standing near a product (snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle), and the photography would be clothing for our catalog.
Thanks again, I’m going to take some time to parse through all of the info and see if I can arrive at a cost estimate. $1500+ it would seem, and I’m sure audio considerations will add to it significantly.

You guys are wonderful. I’m grateful for all of the suggestions and I’m going to write them all done and start implementing them into our process.
Just a quick note on the dialogue specific suggestions: we currently don’t use any sort of script. I’ve just recently pushed for a pre-production meeting with the person that submits the video idea and the person that’ll be on camera in order to iron out our major points and make a sort of rough outline so we’re all on the same page. This has cut down on reshoots quite a bit but I’m still considering implementing an actual script. My only concern is that I’m not a subject matter expert on most of these procedures so the writing process could be a pretty big time investment, considering how long it usually takes to correspond (and hear back) with engineers and techs around here. My other concern is that a script/prompter might make it sound more robotic (considering these guys aren’t professional presenter/speakers) and the perceived credibility of of the on camera talent might take a hit.
Thanks again for all of the great feedback – don’t hesitate to submit more ideas if you’ve got them!

April 26, 2014 at 7:16 pm in reply to: Question about showing 50+ videos in the same frameThanks, Dave!
The method worked perfect but I’m having an issue with dropped frames on the individual clips within my comp. Here’s the clip and you can see the flickering frames on a couple of them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGEAquG9Z7I&feature=youtu.be
When I solo each problematic clip and ram preview it, there’s no flickering. I’ve tried rendering it out (lossless) a couple of times with random different results each time. When I send it to media encoder to render, it doesn’t have any flickering but for some reason insists on downressing the clip to 1440×1080.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again for your help.

Hello, John.
Thank you for your constructive criticism and I apologize for my less than succinct original post.
My question about the video was somewhat broad and could basically be encapsulated into “how can I make it better?” It was the first one I’d shot and I was just sort of winging it with my settings. I was hoping some of you experts might be able to give me some advice along the lines of “well there is no ‘right settings’ because all shoots are subjective, but I generally shoot indoors at X-Y ISO, X-Y aperture, and X shutter speed.
In terms of the time lapse, I was indeed referring to taking a series of photos in succession to later incorporate into a motion video. I’ve since worked out some of the kinks in this area, setting up a round of shots each evening since my OP.
Thanks again for your notes – I’ll try and be more concise next time. It’s just in my experience that when I ask a direct question, the first response is usually, “tell us what you’re shooting” or “give us some more information”.
