    Hi Colourblind –
you are not reading what Jonathan Smiles has written to you. The Blackmagic card has an 9 pin RS422 port on it. This is used for VTR control of Sony VTR’s (in the remote port). You should not use the Addenda Rosetta Stone cable, but just a straight 9 pin cable. The Addenda Rosetta Stone is used only if you take the PC’s 9 pin COMM serial port (which is RS232) and plug the Rosetta Stone into that, and then take the RS422 end and go into your Sony VTR. But because Blackmagic provides a standard RS422 port already, you just use the standard 9 pin cable that Sony provided with the HDW-F500 VTR.

When you state “it worked yesterday, and not it doesn’t work” -unfortunately, you can’t live like this in the computer world. You must UNDERSTAND what is happening, and understand where all the setup menu’s are. This certainly applied when you worked on your AVID, and had to know all about your Video Input and Video Output tools, and it applies to FCP, where you have to understand the Decklink Control Panel, and the Audio/Video Settings menus.

Again, I urge you to hire someone to come in and assist you with this setup. You have a very expensive HD VTR, and you should be able to hire someone for a couple of hours to come in and help you with the setup.

I was trying to make a joke about the AVID Mojo – it is a terrible product.
However, your “green” problem is because you must go into the TOOLS menu, choose Video Tool, and select COMPONENT instead of COMPOSITE, and the green image will become the correct analog component signal. Even when you get the colors to be correct, you will still be disappointed with this product.

Feel free to try the AVID XPress Pro with Mojo . If you like composite OR component only, and 2 channels of unbalanced audio, with no hope of SDI, embedded audio – well, good luck. AVID makes a fine interface, but Mojo ain’t going to work with Premier Pro. And Mojo is a pretty terrible interface for PROFESSIONAL VTR interface.

May I suggest that you check out some AVID forums before you switch to Mojo.
However, if you have $40,000 for a turnkey AVID Adrenaline system (25k for Adrenaline, plus the HP xw8200, plus storage, monitors, etc.), it is a fine product.

yes – the videohub handles SDI Audio (embedded audio in the SDI stream).

    Y, PB, PR
A version of (Y, R-Y, B-Y) specified for the SMPTE analog component standard.
    Y, R-Y, B-Y
The general set of CAV signals used in the PAL system as well as for some encoder and most decoder applications in NTSC systems. Y is the luminance signal, R-Y is the 1st color difference signal, and B-Y is the 2nd color difference signal.
    Y, U, V
Luminance and color difference components for PAL systems. Y, U, and V are simply new names for Y, R-Y, and B-Y; the derivation from RGB is identical.

    Dear Mr. Colourblind,

For the last 25 years, everyone in the professional television industry has been using RS422 (not RS232) for the remote port on Sony and Panasonic professional VTR’s. All modern edit systems from Blackmagic, AJA, AVID, Sony, Grass Valley and everyone else use RS422, not RS232. The Addenda Rosetta Stone adaptor that is most often used is the RS 2/8 which adapts the RS232 port on the PC to RS422 for VTR control. I am not familiar with Adobe Premier Pro, but based on your questions, I get the impression that you are not very familiar with professional video equipment, and I urge you to hire a freelance engineer to assist you in the setup of your equipment. On Final Cut Pro (for example) if your Audio/Video menu settings are not setup correctly, you will nver get audio, video or RS422 VTR control, no matter whose capture card you use. I assume the same applies to Adobe Premier.

  • Simply purchase the AJA I/O LA for $995, and you will be able to do everything.

you mean like AVID’s VTR emulation, which allows the AVID to be controlled by a Sony VTR (or a Telestream, etc.). I am not aware of anything on the market that will Final Cut Pro do VTR emulation (from any board manufacturer), so that you can have a Telecine (for example) control Final Cut Pro. As a matter of fact (and I could be wrong), I don’t believe that AVID Adrenaline systems offer this feature anymore – I belive (and again, I could be wrong) that only AVID Meridian systems offered VTR emulation.

  • How can one not smile at this post, with all of the posts about conversion of Beta VTR’s. The AJA Kona 2 DOES NOT HANDLE ANALOG COMPOSITE OR COMPONENT. You should have purchased an AJA I/O, AJA I/O LA, or AJA Kona LS.

The Kona 2 is an HDSDI or SDI product ONLY, and the component output is there for monitoring the output of the Kona 2 on an older analog component monitor. YOU HAVE THE WRONG PRODUCT for your application.

You can either return your Kona 2, and buy the right stuff, or you can buy AJA converters that will convert analog component and analog audio to SDI and AES/EBU audio. Believe me, this will be way too expensive for you to do, when you can simply resolve all of your problems with a nice AJA I/O LA box for $995.

Should have asked someone before you bought this product.

June 11, 2005 at 7:22 pm in reply to: Edit to Tape problem with DSR-45 and Extreme

You cannot do an edit to tape on a DSR-45. The DSR-45 has no insert edit capability. This applies to all edit systems, including Sony linear edit controllers. When you use the Firewire port, the DSR-45 can do a “psuedo” assemble edit. This issue applies to countless “lower cost” VTR’s from Sony and Panasonic. I went thru this issue, and got lots of false info from people that said “I do it all the time”. It’s amazing the mis-information out there. Let me repeat – even if you have an AVID, you aint’ gonna do an insert edit, edit to tape or Digital Cut to a DSR-45.
