  • Edit to Tape problem with DSR-45 and Extreme

Posted by John Barnard on June 11, 2005 at 2:14 am

I’ve been using the ETT feature all day with a BetaSX machine. It worked just fine.

Later, I hooked up my DSR-45 to do ETT through the anaolg inputs, but It wouldn’t work, Final cut wouldn’t even let let me drop the clip into the little ETT window. And yes, the deck was in remote mode.

I tried the edit to tape feature using firewire instead of RS422 control. THat worked, but I’d like to figure out if there’s something wrong with my RS422 remote. I AM able to log/capture/shuttle using the RS 422, just not Edit to tape. I’ve seen variations on this problem on the cow lately – it seems to be happening alot. THis is a new problem that seemed to pop out from nowhere.

    Any ideas?

You cannot do an edit to tape on a DSR-45. The DSR-45 has no insert edit capability. This applies to all edit systems, including Sony linear edit controllers. When you use the Firewire port, the DSR-45 can do a “psuedo” assemble edit. This issue applies to countless “lower cost” VTR’s from Sony and Panasonic. I went thru this issue, and got lots of false info from people that said “I do it all the time”. It’s amazing the mis-information out there. Let me repeat – even if you have an AVID, you aint’ gonna do an insert edit, edit to tape or Digital Cut to a DSR-45.

Thanks Bob. That’s actually a relief – I thought something was wrong with the remote. It’s funny, I’ve had the Decklink since october and I guess this is the first time I’ve tried to do a proper layback to my own deck.

We have the same problem – can’t edit to tape using a DSR-45 and DeckLink Extreme card. We’ve tried to do it via Firewire and the deck isn’t even recognized. We get the spinning beachball if we have our Firewire LaCie drives connected along with the DSR-45. Called Apple – we did a hardware test (no problems!) and reinstalled the OS as they said. No improvements.

Is there a conflict with having the Decklink card installed and trying to output via Firewire? We can edit to tape using a Beta SP deck, but for this situation we need DV cam.

Turns out we have a bad (or damaged) DSR-45 – or at least the DV port. Sony says the DV port is not hot swappable, so we may have burned the card while switching things around. Both deck and computer must be off when plugging into the DV port on the DSR-45.

We were able to assemble edit to tape in FCP via DV on another DSR-45.
