there are no long term decisions. The Intel based MAC’s are coming, like it or not. Will they use PCI Express – probably – will the existing line of PCIe cards work? Maybe? Who knows – Steve Jobs – why don’t you call him and ask him, and let us know.
These products are cheap, and you should be able to make your money back pretty quickly. Just be prepared to either keep them, or buy new.
Remember, old AVID Meridian systems still make money.

how full is your drive? FW800 and SATA drives decrease in performance as they get above 60% full – if yours is 90% full, you’ve got problems.

ALSO until you get this resolved, forget FCP for now. Just use the Kona Control panel to output – there is a test signal in there to generate color bars, until you are convinced that you are getting a real signal to your monitor.

At this time, I have setup the Kona 2 to output SD composite to a JVC NTSC production monitor.REPLY – Jim – I do not know what monitor you are using, but the Kona 2 can output Serial Digital, and HD-SDI. It cannot output a composite video signal. When you say SD composite, I get the impression you are expecting it to output Standard Def composite to your NTSC monitor composite input. The Kona 2 can only output SERIAL DIGITAL, which requires a SDI monitor (or a converter to go from SDI to SD composite – AJA makes one by the way). If you have the AJA K-Box for the Kona 2 (I don’t know if you have it), you can reconfigure the control panel analog output to change from analog component out to Composite out of the Y channel.
Please let me know if this is, or is not the case.

AJA will be the first to tell you that you cannot run any AJA box and any other firewire device (like a camera or drive) on the same buss (the FW400 and FW800 are on the same buss of the G5). You will be told that you need a seperate FW800 card to run your drive.
With that said, may I suggest that you disconnect your AJA I/O LA, and see if the sequence will simply play back from the G-RAID onto your Mac screen without the AJA I/O LA box hooked up. If it can’t, you got drive issues (maybe it’s too full). If it does playback, get a 50 dollar FW800 card, and this will resolve your problems for layoff.

who cares if it’s possible – there are many things that are possible – LIKE ADDING 2 MORE SLOTS INSIDE THE MAC – but Apple does not want to do it. TO my knowlege, the Intel machines will be PCI Express only – PCI-X will die, and so will your investment (not that you can’t keep using your old hardware – people still make MAJOR MOVIES with old AVID Meridian systems, but these $80,000 systems are dead in the water as far as new technology is concerned).

I am advising you to take your money, and open up a sandwich shop, or get a coffee wagon, and sell coffee and bagels. This investment will not become outdated as fast as any FCP or AVID purchase. I also understand that there are great opportunites open in the septic tank cleaning business.Bob Zelin

Most people today at home have consumer TV sets that have analog component inputs. This means that if you are an insurance salesman, an auto mechanic, a school teacher – and you want to watch movies at home, you get a $100 DVD player from Wal-Mart, and a consumer TV that has COMPONENT VIDEO INPUTS so you can see a good quality picture, from the DVD that you just rented from Blockbuster Video Rentals. Only grandma has an old composite video only TV set at home.
Now, you are a PROFESSIONAL – so I hope that you have the same expectations as an insurance salesman, and auto mechanic, or a school teacher – and you want to have a decent TV at home so you can watch QUALITY VIDEO. Sports fans, or music fans want to see their favorite socker or football game, or rock concert in GREAT QUALITY, and so they connect their cable TV box to the COMPONENT INPUTS of their consumer TV monitor.
Again, you are a PROFESSIONAL that makes his living doing professional animation for the professional video industry. I assume that you have
standards for yourself as high as a school teacher, or even a hockey fanatic that wants to see a good quality picture.Get any damn TV with COMPONENT VIDEO INPUTS on it, and you can see a teriffic picture – even from the Decklink SP – in component video. Use that PVM-14L1 for your VHS dubbing rack – just the way it was intended to be used.
There was a great commercial on VH-1 music television a while ago. It was a young black kid, who had no money. He rode on his bicycle from pay phone to pay phone, trying to get out as many quarters as possible, to save up to get a beat box (drum machine from Roland, etc.) so he could start composing music. And he goes to a pawn shop, and gets some cheap drum machine from the money he barely collected, and starts to compose music. He had no money, but found a way to do it – because he had the drive inside him to make it happen.
You can do the same.

you did not specify what mixer you use, but if you are going into a Mackie, Behringer, Soundcraft Folio, Yamaha, etc. you CANNOT use the XLR inputs, and you must have a properly wired XLR to 1/4″ TRS phone plug, to go into the LINE INPUT of your mixer (like a small Mackie mixer), and your TRIM control must be all the way down, otherwise you will get distortion. The XLR inputs of these mixers are mic inputs (-60db inputs), and they cannot be attenuated for a +4dBu signal that comes out of the Blackmagic, or any professional audio device (like a Sony Beta VTR, etc.).
To demonstrate the problem to yourself, stop using the Blackmagic as an audio source, and use your PROFESSIONAL VTR, like a Sony Beta VTR, Panasonic DVCPro VTR, or Sony DV VTR (like DSR45 or DSR1500 – NOT the pro-sumer DSR-11). You will see that these VTR’s will distort the XLR inputs of your mixer as well.
