Hi Stephen. This is an AJA forum, so I like to discuss AJA equipment. Miranda gear has historically been excellent, but as the company has grown (like Leitch), they have become a little unfocused, and a little unable to handle individual customer support, unlike AJA, Cobalt Digital,Convergent Designs, and other small converter companies. I DO consider AJA the BEST, and I also consider Cobalt Digital and Convergent Designs excellent products as well. However, when you say “we prefer to offer our customers the best” – this means that you are a dealer, and have an interest in getting the highest commissions you can, so you offer the more expensive products. This does not mean that there is anything wrong with Miranda equipment, it just simply costs more, for doing the same job. I like Teranex products too, but until recently, no one other than “rich folks” could afford to buy them.Bob Zelin

Take your Multibridge analog output, and send it into a Behringer analog audio mixer, like a UB1622FX ($179), and sent the Control Room outputs of the Mixer into your Behringer B2031A speakers. This is the way these speakers are designed to operate. This BIG NOISE you are hearing is becuase no one in their right mind would plug the +4dB output of a professional editing system (like Blackmagic, AJA, AVID, etc.) directly into a set of powered speakers – especially like powerful Behringer B2031A (which are one of my favorite speakers).
BUY A MIXER. You will not go broke, and you will no longer be deaf.

let me make this clear to you. When Apple released the PCI Express standard, they wanted to make sure that NO PCI X CARD IN THE WORLD WOULD WORK on a PCI-Express machine. This applies to Atto, Adaptec, SIIG, Blackmagic, AVID, Aurora, Digital Voodoo, and everyone else in the world. This means that your investment in PCI-X cards GOES IN THE GARBAGE. This is a decision that Apple Computer made to punish you.
So now PCI-Express is the standard, and if you buy the MAC Quad with PCI-Express and a bunch of cards, like Blackmagic Decklink cards for PCI Express, or the Multibridge Express – I CAN PROMISE YOU that in several years, Apple will outdate PCI-Express, and something else will come out, and you will have to throw out every , all over again. This cycle will continue until you die, and will continue for your children, and your childrens children.
To continue to work on your PCI-X MAC Computer (which is an excellent computer), you can purchase a wonderful card like the Decklink Extreme for PCI-X, which works great. You have a great computer, and you can make money with it for years to come. But if you try to keep up to date with the latest technology – you will be disappointed every year or two.

I do not know what the hell you are talking about. The AJA Kona 3 can absolutely digitize DVCProHD at 23.98 frame rate. And the Kona 3 can upconvert your SD footage to HD IN REAL TIME. This is the way it works. If you have SDI SD footage, you go into the HD1 input of the Kona 3. The Kona control panel will let you upconvert your footage into the HD timeline – both 720p and 1080i if you like.If you have archive Beta footage, or for that matter, VHS footage – you get an AJA I/O for $2000 – use the Pro I/O control panel to select component (for Beta) or composite (for VHS), and this will convert the YRB or composite footage to SDI. Take the SDI out of the AJA I/O, and stick that right into the HD1 input of your Kona 3. Run FCP, select and HD 720p/23.98 project, and your Beta footage is now being upconverted right into your 720p project.
Of course, this is A LITTLE inaccurate. You should be working at 720p/59.94, becuase your Beta or VHS footage is not 23.98 material, and the AJA – or anything else – will not do this conversion for you. However, all your Panasonic gear will easily convert your 23.98 material into 59.94, so simply open up a 720p/59.94 HD project, and use the technique I described above, and you will be adding in SD material into your HD timeline.
If you have a 23.98 720p timeline, and you need to convert it to 59.94 for output to Standard Def – you simply go to the Audio/Video settings, and in the playback tab, select 720p 29.97 output, and it will play out at a normal frame rate. If you want it to DOWNCONVERT so you can make a Beta copy, go into the Kona control panel in the ANALOG tab, and select the downconversion to 525, and you can output to Beta or VHS.
If you are working for TV release, I see no reason to ever work in 23.98, other than to shoot this way for the film look. Let your VTR do the 2:3 pulldown (so you operate at 59.94 when you edit), and you are done.

Well Dan, I guess Gene is incorrect, or the salesperson you spoke to is incorrect. It is VERY DISAPPOINTING that Canon does not address this on their website, and it is VERY DIFFICULT to get info about the Canon Console CCU application from the web site at all !
It seems insane to have to have THREE computers to control 3 cameras – I can only assume that the Canon demo person was incorrect about this – I did not go to the Canon booth at NAB, but I was told that there was only one computer as well, and it is very frustrating not being able to get accurate info.
As far as “waiting for Sony” – this is the ONLY camera on the market that has HD-SDI out and Genlock in for a 2 or 3 camera HD shoot (unless you have the “big bucks”). To use the Sony HDV cameras, you can only use the Roland Edirol HDV switcher, which has inputs for analog YRB HD signals. The Canon acts like a REAL camera, but it’s only 9 grand. I do, however, need CCU capabilities to match the cameras, and I wish I could get more info on how to do this.

800 543 5440, and get the CE Labs component Video Distribution amplifier for $87. It’s all RCA connectors, but it will do what you want. Part # 33-7050. If $87 is too much money to do this job, then I will have to run you over with my car.Bob Zelin

this is every manufacturer. HD is where every manufacturer wants to be. Just look at Panasonic – everything they showed at NAB was HD – with SD downconverters built in. There are no more Sony Beta VTR’s ! Everything is HD. Now, you say “but my clients still want SD, and hardly anyone wants HD – why should I buy an HD product, when everyone still wants SD video with regular DV ?”. Welcome to our business. I saw Sony discontinue 1″ VTR’s when every TV station in the US only owned and aired spots on 1″ VTR’s. This is how they make money. NO manfacturer, dealer, or consumer store wants to sell anything but NEW PRODUCTS, and SD is a low profit item for them, with no future.

I want to reinforce that you are getting 80mb/sec write speed with your two drives stripped together. THIS IS WRONG – you MUST contact Firmtek to discuss why this is happening.
I don’t give a crap if the AJA doc says that 30mb/sec is enough to do 10 bit uncompressed SD – this is misleading info, as a single SATA drive in optimum conditions (empty) that can do 68mb/sec CANNOT reliably capture 10 bit uncompressed SD video. I have never seen this doc, but if AJA published it, it is WRONG INFO and misleading – I am basing my tests strictly with AJA Kona System test results, and various drives.
Please contact Firmtek and discuss your problem. I suggest that you email them with simple info – tell them the write speed you are getting with both drives stripped together, and ask them if this is the correct results.
