Hey –
I am just waiting for the first post that says “thank God for the new Apple HomePod, because now I can do all the audio mixing and finishing at my facility !”For those of us in the industry for a long time, that remember the Auratone speakers that everyone owned, I am well aware that the original horrible Apple Earbuds became the replacement for Auratones. So perhaps the new Apple HomePod will become the “Gelenec replacement”.
OMG – someone is still making Auratones !

if we see the next post down from Bill Davis that says “the reason that this iPhone X tastes so delicious is because it was edited using FCP X” – would you both agree to fly with me (my treat) to Bill Davis’ location and just kill him, so we don’t have to hear this anymore – would you agree with me and go ? Lifetime in prison would be a vacation.

No manufacturer (AJA, Blackmagic) is going to be excited to write NEW drivers for free for eight year old hardware. And even if that happened, with the release of macOS 10.13 High Sierra and SIP (System Integrity Protection) it’s a nightmare to install drivers for even current hardware like ATTO, Promise, Sonnet, etc. Apple is becoming more and more uncooperative with third party manufacturers (think NVidia) – why ? I don’t know – probably money. So at this moment, if you think the “new” non existant Mac Pro will be what “we all dream of” – a new computer from Apple that can run any third party hardware that we desire – well, I think that is a big pipe dream as of 2018. Not that the computer won’t ultimately come out – but a dream that you will be able to install legacy hardware or anything else that your company desires to put into this new Mac.

OMG ! I know that you feel that I am attacking you with my response, and I fully appreciate that you are a very VERY ambitious student (more than most professionals I know) – but I have to respond.1) you are a student. You do not need LTO for your project. It is fantastic that you want to learn about LTO, and that you are becoming aware of the different types of LTO archive solutions on the market. But this is not your financial responsibility, and no offense, but your school project is not that critical that it requires LTO archive.
2) your school department (film department, video department, communications department) should purchase this software for both you AND the students (and the LTO drive, and tapes – well maybe not the tapes) if they feel that LTO is critical to the workflow of your classes or projects. The school can certainly afford it. It’s not your responsibility. I think it’s great that you want to do this, and are interested in learning this, as when you get out, your real job as an assistant editor will involve boring things that include transcoding, exporting, and archiving projects. Your LTO knowledge will be very valuable for you.
3) I am very anti school. While you have no money, your PARENTS that are funding you for an education whose degree will mean nothing in the real world, would be better suited to purchase real LTO software for you, instead of paying for school. What you will find, is that in the real world, your extensive knowledge of LTO, transcoding, storage, software from Adobe, Davinci Resolve, AVID, FCP X and assorted graphics programs (Cinema 4D, etc.)
will find you a job in this industry in a heartbeat, compared to a “student” with a 4.0 GPA and a nice independent film. Everyone is a film maker. Not everyone knows the knowledge that you appear anxious to learn. That knowledge will give you the opportunity to “get in” and move forward with your career – not your creative film making class.Trust me Rachael – don’t waste 5 minutes with HP StorOpen. It will leave you with heartache and frustration.
And I just looked – YoYotta ID is 160 british pounds, and MyLTO for Mac from Imagine Products is $299.
Besides – who is going to get you the LTO drive, which costs thousands of dollars, even if you had the software for free ?Just my stupid 2 cents.

why would you do this today? Why would you want to run XSAN on a dedicated computer to do shared storage, when it’s all self contained by products from companies like QNAP and Synology, for a fraction of the price. And with products like the TVS-1282T3, you get 4 working thunderbolt 3 ports (in addition to two 10G port and four 1G ports) all for about $3000. Doesn’t that make more sense. And since you do AVID all the time, all you have to do is run Indiestor Mimiq on the Media Composer stations, and get full AVID bin locking. Doesn’t that make more sense ?bob Zelin

I am so confused by your post. Creative Cow has both NAS and SAN forums, yet you are asking questions about
Network attached storage, on the Archiving and Backup forum.You state that in the past, I mentioned NAS products from “these companies” – which companies ? QNAP, Synology, Netgear ? I certainly never recommended using the Drobo.
It is very simple to accomplish exactly what you want with modern inexpensive NAS products that are on the market. With products like QNAP, if you have a redundant unit, you use Backup Station (now called Hybrid Sync Backup) to do “RTRR” – real time remote replication, where whatever is on the main system, will be backed up to the redundant system, somewhere else on the network, or across the internet. These types of systems run all by themselves once they are setup, and require no IT administration. You state that you don’t have much expertise in this area. I do. I do this every day.
You state that you want the RAID to “self heal”. I am not sure what that means. Modern RAID arrays are protected in RAID 5 (one drive can fail) or RAID 6 (2 drives can fail) without losing your data. When a drive fails, you simply replace the defective drive, and the RAID automatically rebuilds without you doing anything. But broken SATA drives don’t fix themselves. You have to replace defective drives. Luckily, SATA drives today are very reliable, and most carry 5 year warrantees.
A typical NAS system costs about $3000 for video editing, not including the price of the drives. This is cheaper than ever before.

They had a big booth, with different apps and hardware, showing Apple computers working with AJA, Blackmagic, Media Composer, etc, etc. But these days, it seems that Apple wants to do just the opposite. “You don’t need anything besides Apple”. God forbid Apple works with third party vendors like NVidia, etc.

You see – THATS the problem. The goal is to make EVERYONE an editor. And unfortunately, this will happen. And there will be no generic video business – just like there is barely a professional audio business (Recording Studios) or Print houses. And with RARE exception, any need for “professional” photographers (and the ones that exist make a fraction of what they used to make).
In the same way that there is a small handful of hi end recording studios, a handful of hi end photographers, a handful of print shops, these businesses, which were abundant at one time, are now over for the mass market of people that made their living with this stuff. And “we” are next.

buy a newer cheaper system. What are you looking for – a support person that will sell you a personal Isilon contract that is cheaper than Isilon ? Drives today – entire shared storage systems, are dirt cheap compared to the old days. I bet an entire new system will cost less than the Isilon support contract.
