As you get deeper into the video business, you will soon realize that you will keep spending, and spending and spending, and it’s NEVER over. You have correctly observed that you now will need to route your analog component signal to different places – like your Plasma or LCD display, and to your Beta VTR, and who knows where else. There are many solutions to this problem, but the easiest cheapest solution is a video patch bay (about $500 from Canare). This will allow you to patch the signal around to different destinations. Certainly a router that can handle analog HD would be easier (just push a button), but requires as much wiring, and will cost A LOT MORE MONEY. Another solution is to get an analog component HD DA (from someone like Kramer electronics), which will electronically split the analog component signal (even if it’s HD component) and sent it to the Beta VTR AND to the Plasma TV -all at the same time with no patching. If you want to re-use the drives that you just purchased, you can put them, along with 7 more, into two Sonnet Fusion 500P external SATA chassis, and control all of it with a Sonnet E4P card. If you are willing to simply use these for graphics, and want to spend a little less, you can get the fantastic Cal-Digit S2VR, which comes with drives (no, you can’t buy it empty and put in your own drives), and this single 5 drive chassis will do uncompressed HD.

If this is a 59.94 720p project, simply go into the Kona Control Panel, select the analog tab, and downconvert to 525. It’s real easy to do this, and has nothing to do with the FCP application. It’s all done in the Kona Control Panel.

Whoever told you that RAID 0 arrays needs to be in pairs is mis-informed. This was a “rule” years ago on OS-9 MAC AVID systems, and it no longer applies to any MAC or PC AVID or FCP system.
If you have Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 drives, this will work just fine for 8 and 10 bit Standard Def uncompressed, and DVCProHD. This will NOT be fast enough for uncompressed HD. If you require uncompressed HD, let me know, and I will tell you what to get, and where to get it.
You can test your RAID speed using AJA Kona System Test, which is a free download on the AJA website.

you are not “stuck” with the old 2 bay Firmtek enclosure. You can put those very drives inside a Sonnet Fusion 500P, and they will work just fine (with room for 3 more drives). And of course, you can move this onto a Mac Pro with the E4P card or the incredible Cal-Digit FASTA-4e SATA card.

You just said “ok, that works, but I still can’t playback directly out of FCP”.
This is what you will do. You will go into the EASY SETUPS and choose a setting like “AJA I/O Betacam 8 bit uncompressed”. If you go into the Easy Setups, and say “what the hell is this guy talking about, I don’t see anything that says AJA anything” – it means that you DID NOT LOAD THE AJA DRIVERS. Go to the http://www.aja.com website and load the correct drivers for your product. Now if you say “yea yea yea – I see the AJA I/O Betacam 8 bit uncompressed 8 bit setting, I select it, and I STILL don’t see anything”, then RELOAD YOUR DRIVERS ANYWAY from the AJA site, load the analog NTSC driver, and try it again (select EASY setup Betacam 8 bit uncompressed, and try it again).
If you STILL don’t see anything, go to the VIEW menu, and look for the EXTERNAL VIDEO selection – and select ALL FRAMES – if it’s on OFF, you ain’t gonna get a picture.
If you try all of this, and you still don’t get a picture, CALL AJA IN CALIFORNIA – that’s right – you are going to make a long distance phone call, and wait on hold, and get charged money for this, but you will get the correct response.

Are you seeing this flicker only in FCP. Many VTR’s can’t handle hi video levels, and many TV monitors have clamping issues with illegal levels. If this signal looks ok directly out of the VTR into your TV, but only jitters when digitized into FCP, and then flickers – I would be very surprised. Digital capture cards simply clip the video.

Open your Kona Control Panel (close FCP). Go to the CONTROL TAB, and select a test pattern like Color Bars. Go to the Analog tab, and select COMPOSITE for the video output. Take your Out Y cable, and stick this into your TV.
You should see a color bar signal on your consumer TV, if you have VIDEO IN, or LINE IN selected on your TV.Bob ZElin
