February 1, 2021 at 6:15 pm in reply to: Betacam tape digitized color is saturated and phase seems offThe UVW-1800 has a TBC built into it. Take the ForA out of the equation ! You don’t need it.
As for your levels (saturated color, phase is off) if you don’t have scopes, you can’t make any adjustments.

Jeremy is of course, correct. I don’t care if you are using Resolve, Media Composer or Premiere. Proxy workflow is a standard workflow these days, and has been especially reinforced due to remote editing in 2020 – current. You don’t need a new computer, you need to change your workflow (and you probably need faster storage). Getting a “new M1 Mac” will not make your drives work faster. Cutting in full res 4K or higher (6K, 8K) is nothing like cutting in HD. So use Proxy footage, like everyone else is doing, and your problems will be gone.

Hi David and Tim –
I just called OWC at (800) 275 4576. I spoke with Celeste in Customer Support. She said they have not heard of Tolis Group, nor are they offering support of Tolis Group products. How could this be ? So I went to https://www.owc.com and there is no mention of Tolis Group or BRU. Now, I if I do a Google search on this, I can find quotes from Larry O’Connor at OWC talking about this. But I don’t understand how the employees of OWC are unaware of this. I will call back OWC again soon – perhaps this person at OWC was simply uninformed. I probably am not searching properly, or just contacting the wrong people ! It must be me.

This is great news Tim ! In 2021, LTFS is the only way to go. I just saw this article from StorageDNA –
https://storagedna.com/resources/white-papers/2_white-paper_facts-about-lto-and-ltfs/
“Why LTO and LTFS is the best option for long-term data storage” –
and between what MagStor is doing, and of course MLogic (MTape), YoYotta, Imagine Products, Hedge (Canister), and now Archiware – and of course, what I posted what OWC is doing, I am sure that Tim Jones will abandon any proprietary format of BRU, and follow the direction of the entire LTO industry, and move towards development of LTFS products. I mean – lets face it – who in their right minds is going to go against HP, IBM and Quantum, especially with every small manufacturer that services our industry, to NOT use LTFS.
https://www.lto.org/linear-tape-file-system/
EVERYONE is doing LTFS. Just look here at GB Labs with Easy LTO –
https://www.gblabs.com/products/easylto
“Uniquely the system also allows users to mount LTFS tapes on their desktops through the network. “
I tried to contact OWC today to discuss all of this, but I had trouble getting through. I will continue to try this week, and report back of what they tell me.
Thank you for posting this

I am also very very happy that Other World Computing is currently recommending the LTFS format for their own branded LTO products –
LTFS Compatible: archive files/folders with drag and drop easeSimple Interface: mount, format, and backup to an LTO tape and hard drive simultaneously via included myLTO® app
There’s a priceless convenience of familiarity in using the OWC Mercury Pro LTO to protect your data. By using archiving industry standard Linear Tape Open (LTO) tapes formatted with the Linear Tape File System (LTFS), the tapes can be accessed on your computer just like a hard drive or SSD. Files appear in folders and moving them to/retrieving them from tape is drag and drop easy. And compatibility has never been more simple…thanks to LTFS, LTO tapes can be read from a Mac, PC, or Linux system so there’s no extra software to buy or proprietary hardware concerns.
you can see that this product comes with myLTO software from Imagine Products. And OWC is also recommending Pomfort Silverstack XT, Hedge Canister, YoYotta LTFS, XenData6 Workstation, Archiware P5, and more.
So I think it’s pretty clear as to the direction that OWC wants to go with this product line.

Hi Tim –
this is a great post. MagStor is a great company, and YoYotta is a great company. Martin is a pleasure to deal with and is very very responsive to customers. And so is Hedge with Canister.

everything you want is on ebay. A thunderbolt 2 capture product from AJA or Blackmagic, and an old Beta SP VTR. Like I said – who knows what kind of condition your Beta machine will be in –

how can anyone answer you, and tell you what capture product to get, if you don’t say what Mac Pro you have – a 2009 Mac Pro, a 2013 Mac Pro Cylinder, or a 2019 Mac Pro ?
And you do know, when you go to eBay to get the cheapest BetaSP machine you can find, the odds are, it will break while you are using it, and chew up your tapes
