Hey, I know that Snapchat is really popular if you want to email a picture of your “junk” to your girlfriend and have it disappear before her parents see it –
But I am looking for PROFESSIONAL users, not a kid whose mom bought him a MacBook Pro, and he can’t figure out why he can’t playback 8K on his internal drive. Reddit appears to be flooded with those types of users, and not professionals asking professional questions.But thanks !

I believe these were made by JMR a long time ago.Looking for the least expensive 8 bay array on Amazon is not going to help you.

You cannot put thunderbolt on an old Mac Pro. There are no cards to do this.

First I want to apologize to you for responding as aggressively as I did in my original post. I am a heavy drinker, and have these crazy responses based on my alcohol intake. With that said –
You are 61 – I am 63. Many people our age are retired and “can’t take this anymore”. I understand that you have a Z820 running Windows 10. I understand that you have a feature film to deliver (and you have a limited budget or no budget to deliver this film).But the reality of this situation is that in 2018, things are cheaper than ever (from our past, and how much hardware used to cost to accomplish what we can do today). People like Alex Gardiner of Indiestor allow us to continue to use Media Composer for a 1/100th of the cost of AVID hardware, and I am very grateful of this fact. And modern computers, and the low cost of 10TB, 12 TB and 14 TB ! drives are almost inconceivable in their low cost today compared to what we used to spend in the past (many people our age know that that a 9 Gig drive from AVID cost
$5000, and today a 14 TB drive from Seagate cost $499).Because both you and I continue to do this for a living, you must be aware of the fact that things become obsolete very quickly, and that the cost of doing anything is much less than just several years ago. So when I see you post that you are trying to create a RAID using the native port on an obsolete HP Z820 computer – (which used to be the BEST computer in the world) – well, what can I say. Things change – and they change very quickly in todays world.
I know very well that with todays limited budgets, spending the money for an Areca ARC-1883x AND an external RAID chassis (or an ATTO R680 AND an external RAID chassis) is really expensive, compared to using the native hardware that is “theoretically available” on your Z820 motherboard – but no one does this. Not AVID – not anyone.
You know very well, that it costs money to be in our industry, and creating a RAID array that will work for you properly is expensive.
I am so sorry that I was such a jerk in my original response to you (I think I tried to correct it before you saw it, but I was too late) – but I know where both of us come from, and how much everything costs back then- – and how cheap everything is today in comparison..
Anyway – with that said – Indiestor ROCKS, and if anyone needs AVID compatible shared storage – there is no better solution than Indiestor Mimiq !

just to take this one step further (because I like to yap) –
I recently put an ATTO thunderbolt 3 to 40G Ethernet adaptor and plugged it into a QNAP with a 40G Mellanox ethernet card. The Mac was a Mac Pro 6,1. and I had to use a thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3 adaptor (at the time, I did not have access to a thunderbolt 3 computer). So because of the limitation of the 10Gb/sec Thunderbolt 2 port – I only got 1000 MB/sec read and write.
So as Melvin states – if you don’t have the correct buss structure on your computer, you can have all these other fancy parts, and it’s still not going to make your old junk work correctly.

long story, but here it goes.
Years ago, I purchased a copy of OS X 10.6 from Apple on DVD.
I built a boot drive. I used this to clone other boot drive. I eventually updated my 10.6 boot drive to 10.6.8
10.7 came out. I took another empty drive, cloned it from the 10.6.8 drive, and now it was 10.7
I then cloned the 10.7 drive, and used that, but the 10.7 “clean drive” stayed in my closed, along with the 10.6.8 drive, which was used for cloning only.I have been following this process since then. When 10.13 came out, I made by clone of 10.12.6, and updated that drive to 10.13. That became my “master. I cloned that and used that clone of 10.13 (which eventually became
10.13.6). When 10.14 came out recently, I took out the 10.13 master, cloned it to another drive, updated it to 10.13.6, and then updated it to 10.14. Once I had the master 10.14 SATA drive, I cloned that to a 120 Gig SSD, which is now my “daily use” drive in my 2009 Mac Pro (which has been flashed to a 5,1 with updated boot firmware).
The tests I just showed with Mojave, the Sonnet 10G PCIe card, and the QNAP TS-1685 were done from that SSD.So it is a “fresh install” – well, its a clone from a clone dating back to a OS X 10.6 DVD, but yes, I guess it’s a fresh installation.
I just did a service call this past Thursday for a client that has a brand new iMac Pro, and was getting terrible performance with their Adobe software. I went over, and saw that their IT deparment simply migrated EVERYTHING from his 6,1 Mac Pro, without reinstalling anything or cleaning out anything. A new 1TB internal boot SSD was already almost 95% full after having the machine for 2 days. I saw every version of Acobe on it from 2014, 2015, 2016, etc. all the way to the lastest Adobe CC download. Tons of programs that were not being used, and my client has no idea of what most of the stuff in the Applications folder even was.I don’t know why people do this. Because they can’t be bothered reinstalling their software, year after year, after year – and going from computer to computer to computer. So when I saw the poor performance of this expensive new machine – well I understood instantly what was going on. Sometimes, if you don’t empty the garbage in your kitchen, your kitchen will start to stink !

Hi Nick –
I am building a new QNAP TS-1685 today, that I will put QTS 4.3.5 onto (latest firmware build).
I am going to test this with a Mac (using Sonnet Presto Solo 10G card) – the Mac will be running macOS 10.14 Mojave.
I will use both AJA System Test and Blackmagic Speed test once it’s ready. I will report back my results.As for Spotlight and Qsirch – when you first reported it, I installed Qsirch on a system (QTS 4.3.5 beta), and with a
macOS 10.13.6 Mac, I did a search – NOT with the magnifying glass, but you open the mounted QNAP drive, and in search, type something in – and it found it. So I did not do extensive testing, but that seems to work. I would love to hear more details about what you are trying to do, that it will not search for.Bob Zelin
