I have seen this – but I want to repeat that you will get different performance on different computers.
Don’t you have access to another computer that you can test with ?

I am not going to start blaming the QNAP if it’s just your computer. Just this morning, I had a client complaining –
he has multiple computers (both Win 10 and Mac’s) on a QNAP TVS-1282T3 with the latest firmware. All 10G, all going thru a Netgear XS712T. All the computers (assorted 10G adaptors or NIC cards) were doing over 800 MB/sec, but ONE iMac was doing only about 300 MB/sec. Why – I have no idea – we tried a different port on the switch, and still only 300 MB/sec. (this was a Sonnet Twin 10G on a T2 iMac running macOS 10.14). Unless he was willing to reinstall the macOS and start all over, I cannot tell you why this ONE computer was running less than half the speed of all his other 10G computers on the same QNAP, using the same switch.

by adding more drives, you have increased the total aggregate bandwidth of your QNAP.
A 10G connection theoretical bandwidth is 1250 MB/sec, and I have never seen more than about 1000 MB/sec, even with a Win 10 PC and a 10G NIC card.

Different computers, and different 10G boxes have different speeds. 900 MB/sec is plenty of speed. Now, if you have multiple editors connecting to your QNAP, your system will not be bogged down because you only have 4 drives, which had limited total aggregate bandwidth.

Make sure you have disabled SMB signing –
you can tell this by looking at the /etc/nsmb.conf file in your Mac.
you should see this inside the file
[default]
signing_required=no

if you don’t, this needs to be installed, and your computer rebooted.

For your sanity, try another thunderbolt 2 computer with your 10G adaptor, and see what the speeds are like.

as NO ONE needs all those slots, no one needs all those ports, no one needs all that RAM, etc.
You can do “EVERYTHING” with the current Mac’s – why would anyone need anything else ?

Yes – the new Mac Pro looks amazing, and coming from a background of very expensive Sony VTR’s – it really doesn’t matter what it costs, because a HP Z8 loaded with RAM, dual RTX-2080ti’s, HP Dreamcolor Z31X monitor, etc. costs a fortune as well.

We have another PROFESSIONAL product from Apple now – who cares what people that don’t do professional hi end work think about this. I am happy it cost a lot of money.

as per AJA Data Calc –
Ultra HD 4K 23.98 ProRes is 66.06 MB/sec

so theoretically, about 27 streams. But I personally never tried this, as the TS-1683XU-RP is a new unit.
But my clients are using it and not complaining.

I have answered your questions in the Reddit QNAP forum, but here we go again –

you should create a single static volume. You will use either RAID 5 (for one drive failure before catastrophic data loss) or RAID 6 (for 2 drive failures before catastrophic data loss). I usually prefer and insist on RAID 6. Since you are looking for speed, the static volume will outperform a thick volume storage pool. There is no reason for you to create multiple volumes from a storage pool. You can create shared folders for each of your applications, users or requirements (graphics, audio, media, projects, cache, etc.) and assign permissions for each folder to the individual users.

I never use snapshots. You enable the Recycle Bin, and if someone foolishly or accidentally deletes data from your TVS-1282T3, you simply drag it out of the QNAP recycle bin. You can set the number of days before the QNAP recycle bin will empty itself.

I have a simple answer for you. If you are doing emails and phone calls in the afternoon – then let the assistant use your computer ! Problem solved.
As for “split up the investment” – if you are on Win PC’s, you are simply purchasing two QNAP QXG-10G1T cards and a single ethernet Cat 6 cable, and enabling file sharing. That is $89 per card and a $12 cable. That is not splitting up the investment. That is one nice evening out. The purchase of any shared storage system and eight drives will cost dramatically more than this.
Many people suffer with “sneaker net” for years before buying shared storage. I suggest that you do the same until you can afford the NAS.

If you have a dedicated PC as the file server, and a 2 port NIC card in the dedicated server, then you can get
the 2 PC’s to connect to the dedicated server, and share the same media drive.

If one of those 2 PC’s is ALSO the server, this simply will not work. Everything will lock up.

That is why cheap QNAP and Synology products have become popular.

it will not work.
If you setup your Mac # 1 as the “server” with “File Sharing” for the drive, you can get Mac # 2 to access it.
The minute you have Mac # 1 start to use that same drive, everything will lock up.
This has been the case before 2008, before I started doing Mac servers (when Mac servers worked).
When Mac servers actually worked, you would get SOME dedicated Mac (like a Mac mini) – and some small switch, and some drive connected to the dedicated Mac mini – and your two computers would connect to that switch to access the drive that is connected to the Mac mini.

SO – how do you do this with just the 2 computers, where they both access the same drive –
simple answer – you don’t.

A QNAP TVS-872XT is $1899. Of course, you have to add 8 matching drives. That is the cheapest way you are going to pull this off. Buying a Mac mini and a dedicated thunderbolt array like a Promise R8 and a Sonnet Twin 10G or Promise SanLink2 will cost you more than the QNAP.
