there is no mention of Thunderbolt 3 optical cables. At NAB 2019, Corning showed these cables, and they went with me to the QNAP booth, where we plugged in a Thunderbolt 3 Mac Pro to a QNAP TVS-872XT using a long Thunderbolt 3 optical cable, and it worked perfectly. So I have no idea of why Corning is delaying this product – because I saw it, and I saw it working.

There will be some “political” answer behind this.

And with that said – how many “post facilities” exist with actual machine rooms anymore ?
With the exception 10 places in LA, and 4 places in NY, are we going to see racks of new Mac Pro’s, and giant shared storage servers feeding out to 20 – 40 edit rooms ? Remember, this is 2019.

when I see reports from Adobe, Blackmagic, Cinema 4D, and AVID about how amazingly fast the new Mac Pro is, and I see hardware being shown by AMD and Promise for the new Mac Pro, then I will get excited.

no, its not safe. But for now, for the case of QNAP, they wrote and posted the Malware remover on 11/5/2019, so that problem is over.

But just like with any PC, any Mac, any computer (like your bank account) – if you are on line, there is always a risk. There is a risk of your money being stolen, and there is certainly a risk of you picking up a virus. Which is my many companies either have redundant backups that are off line, or keep the entire shared storage system off line.

But today, with the convenience of remote access of your media over the internet, many people take the risk.

I must be confused. Why do you think that spending $49 on a 1G 5 port TP link switch would be acceptable ?
There are many inexpensive wonderful network attached storage systems that you can use.
With a 1G connection, you will only get 100 MB/sec. Even if you were to only rely on an internet router, all MODERN internet routers are 1G, so if you plugged in 2 computers to a MODERN 1G internet router, and you did a simple file transfer you would get 100 MB/sec.
If in your testing, you got 10 Mb/sec, well, something is very wrong – with the router, with your cabling, with your network cards.

But even if you got 100 MB/sec between the 2 computers with a simple file transfer, you cannot use one computer with it’s storage, and then have a second computer plug into the first computer network port, and have both computers edit from the same drive array.

I tried this year ago (2006 – 2007) with 2 Mac Pros, a large external RAID array, and doing simple file sharing. The remote computer would play, but when you started to use the host computer (where the RAID storage was), everything would crash.

SO – you are now stuck with buying some sort of a shared storage system. And there is nothing for $50 or $100 that you can purchase. There are wonderful inexpensive products like the ProMax MediaHub, and assorted products from QNAP and Synology that will do the job for you, but you are going to spend a few thousand dollars to make this work.

That is the expense that you must incur to have shared storage between multiple editing stations.

are you an expert with FreeBSD as an operating system ? If you are, then look at the Storinator.
If you say “what the hell is FreeBSD” – then there are countless other systems that are available on the market that are actually EASY to navigate and setup, without being an IT expert.

If you are asking because you saw a recent YouTube video from Linus Media Group – you should then watch Marquis comments at the end of that video. He wound up with a Lumaforge Jellyfish, because he did not have the time to screw around with it. There are lots of great systems are the market from ProMax, Studio Network Solutions, Lumaforge, QNAP, Synology, etc.
But hey – if you have the initiative to become a FreeBSD IT guy – then go for it !

I feel compelled to respond – even though Creative Cow audience participation is down from the past.

I hate Apple. I think that Tim Cook should be burned at the stake. But I am one of the few that feels that way, since the Apple shareholders are making a fortune of money through his guidance of what sells (so what the heck do I know). Apple watches, Apple iPads, Apple iPhones, low end Apple computers – THAT is what is making money – even though all of these are expensive.

And before I go on my rant – I am the (proud – or embarassed) new owner of a 2018 Mac Mini, a 2017 MacBook Pro, and a brand new 2019 iPhone 11 – so tell me when to just shut up !

All that really matters to any reader of Creative Cow (except Robin Kurz and Bill Davis) is what is going on with the new Mac Pro. The iMac Pro – a completely non upgradeable computer, that features the now obsolete AMD Vega 64, will be replaced with the incredible (both performance wise and expense wise) new 2020 Mac Pro, at an entry level price of $5999. And will be in real life (if you want it to outperform any Win 10 PC) to be about $10,000 – $15,000 dollars.

Now – if we make the money that we make, and a new AMAZING Mac Pro is $15,000 – does it really matter in the “big picture” – not really. But you can’t ignore the fact that a Puget System $6000 computer with NVidia RTX-2080ti running Davinici Resolve or Adobe Premiere can do the same thing. So, in the end – if Apple winds up with an additional $9000 in profit – does it really matter ?

I mean – we used to spend $80,000 for an AVID Media Composer, and when the AVID Adrenaline came out, it was $25,000. And then FCP REALLY happened (with the AJA I/O box which was $2000 and did the same damn thing) and AVID fans said “oh that is a bunch of crap”.
But my world changed -and FCP and AJA I/O was THE NEW WORLD, and EVERYONE switched to Apple FCP. (and the AVID fanboys said (and still say) that FCP is a bunch of crap).

So it’s the same story – history repeats itself. Apple is about to release an amazing new product. I am sure it will “kick ass” and be amazing (and certainly compete with HP Z8 and Puget Systems with RTX-2080ti). But what does this mean – at it’s price ? Is Apple the new AVID (from years ago) ?
