I work for a lot of companies, and certainly, I have had a few “tiny” customers (struggling companies that could be as small as 1 or 2 people) that have stiffed me for the money.
But what I have found, in recent times, is that most companies, big and small, pay me. But the BIG ones (I mean the giants) torture me about getting paid. 60 days is VERY common. I did a job in 2019, where I showed them what to purchase at B&H Photo, and they said “can you just get it for us”. Sure – it’s a Fortune 500 company. 30 days pass, no money, 60 days pass no money. “The corporate policy is to pay on the second Tuesday of the month, after 60 days has past”. In the mean time, I had to pay my credit card bill for their equipment. Stupid me ! I should have drilled them for this information before I asked.
I have LOTS of variations on this story. I install shared storage systems for video editing, and I got called by a Medical Insurance Company (MY Medical Insurance Company) if I could do a system for their video marketing department. They wanted a big enterprise QNAP system with about 200 TB of storage. SO, I tried to “twist this around”. I told them that there was no need for me to submit a quote. This was an expensive system, and I would PURCHASE the system for them, and install it, and both the equipment and labor for installation would be FREE – no charge to them, if I could just get 1 year of free medical insurance (I have been a client of theirs since 1999 – meaning I give them money every year since 1999). They emailed me back the next day, and said no – they will purchase the equipment, and I should just bill for my labor. So I do the install, and bill for my labor. 30 days pass, 60 days pass – WHERE IS MY MONEY. If I don’t send THEM my monthly premium they will drop my insurance, but when it comes time to PAYING ME, well – they take their time.
I have other stories as well, but it’s all the same stuff. I am sure that every small business owner here has stories like this. It’s funny, because new freelancers, or staff people always think that “we make so much money”. They don’t know what we have to go through to collect (least not solicit new business).

this is exactly what OWC is recommending (since they now own SoftRaid).
This seems ideal for 8K full format workflow (for those crazy enough to insist on that), but it would work. And then someone will complain “hey – I got two of those Sonnet/OWC cards with 16TB of NVMe’s and I am getting stuttering playback on my GoPro footage”.
So the complaining will never stop.

what do I suggest ? I suggest that you contact me, like everyone else in the video business does, who is using shared storage. Just like you did, in the past.
You are running (according to your post) very very old firmware – QTS 4.3.3.
I know for a fact (because I keep notes on all my clients) that I upgraded you to QTS 4.3.4. So I have no idea of you are assuming that you are running QTS 4.3.3, because you have not checked, or if you back rev’ed the firmware from what I did (QTS 4.3.4) to QTS 4.3.3. I have no idea of what is going on with your system.The reason you are getting the message to update to QTS 4.3.6.0959 is because you can’t do a direct update to the latest QTS 4.4.1. And once you do this firmware update to QTS 4.3.6, it will require you to do a “check file system” which takes about 3 hours, because your system is so old.
Once that is done, you will be running QTS 4.3.6.0959, and now you will have the option to update to QTS 4.4.1 if you wish.I don’t know when exactly you spoke with QNAP. The earlier versions of QTS 4.4.1 were not stable. The latest version of QTS 4.3.6 that was wonderfully stable is QTS 4.3.6.1070.
But QTS 4.4.1 has been out for a long time now, and it’s perfectly stable. If and when you decide to update, you have to do this in stages – first to QTS 4.3.6 and then to QTS 4.4.1This is no different than any computer based product from any manufacturer. Just look at Apple. There were 6 versions of macOS 10.14, and currently there are 3 versions of macOS 10.15 (we are currently at macOS 10.15.2).
Exactly what are you afraid of ? Things aren’t going to fix themselves. The reasons ALL software have “dot” releases, and updates, are to fix issues. IF you are the person that says “I just want things to work, and just be left alone” – well, my friend, you are in the wrong business. Every manufacturer has constant updates, be it your iPhone, your Mac, your editing software, or your shared storage system.

Kevin Patrick contacted me. There were 2 problems in his system causing issues, that resulted in his slow speeds.
1) the latest QNAP firmware is not working correctly with his QNAP TS-873U-RP. After several tests with different firmware, we finally installed QNAP QTS 4.3.4.0569 from May 1, 2018, and now he is able to select MTU 9000
on the QNAP 10G card.SO SOMEHOW – -I installed QTS 4.3.4 back in 2018, and now, mysteriously, he is back to QTS 4.3.3.
How did this happen ?

without any prior clients, no one will take you seriously. Get some clients – then you can start a company. You just don’t show up, and say “I am the greatest After Effects/NUKE/Fusion guy in the world – here I am – you can book me now !”. No one will care.

and Sonnet is offering the same NVMe PCIe solution. This is all great. This is what open architecture is all about.
I am just waiting to see official comments from Adobe, AVID, Maxon, and Blackmagic about their claims on the performance with the 2019 Mac Pro. From all the YouTube influencers, we already know that it’s great with FCP X.

yes, the XS708T is the most tried and true. And it’s just a few dollars more.
And yes, you need to keep your wonderful Ubiquiti 1G switch. We are setting up 2 networks –

I am not a fan of the QSW-1208-8C only because I cannot monitor it over the internet. This is not a managed switch, or can it do LACP Link Aggregation. Currently the Netgear XS708T on Amazon is
$619. With that said, the QSW-1208-8C will work perfectly fine for you, certainly in a small enviornment.You keep TWO networks going. This switch is not for the internet. You have a very nice
Ubiquiti Edge 10X. That is great for your house internet and reliable WiFi. That will plug into one of the two 1G ethernet ports on your TVS-872XT (if you want remote access to the QNAP, and sync to Google Drive, Drop Box, etc.). The single 10G port on the TVS-872XT (ethernet port 1) will go to your 10G switch, and your 2 client computers will connect to this switch as well, via 10G.Easy, and reliable. Don’t forget the 10G adaptors for your edit workstations !
