Ignoring the laptops respective operating systems, I’d go with the Sony. 25-30% cheaper, relatively comparable boxes. BUT (**big** BUT) it’s the OS that brings the system to life. I’ve been PC for 20 years, SGI/Mac/PC for 7 years, and now Mac/PC for 4 years. Until OSX, never had a desire for Mac as my primary box. Now I have no desire for another PC. Sure, I’ve got a XP box next to my G5, but 95% of my work is done on the Mac, and that’s the way I now prefer it. Yeah, I sound like a drooling Mac syncophant, but bottom line is that after 20 years of computer use, I like the Mac better than the others, period. (Note it wasn’t always that way. I even preferred NT over OS9!) And now that you can dual-boot a Mac…. well DUH.
So what I’m saying is, don’t compare the hardware, compare the OS’s. -
You took my “no fun” the wrong way – I meant it’s fun to learn & experiment, thus expanding your capabilities. There’s also the budget aspect of some productions, where if you can’t DIY, it can’t be done at all. Sure, I’ve hired other pros when needed, but I’m also a well-rounded production pro myself due to always watching, learning and trying it myself. Grin… I quit from one of the top networks years ago, since the management wanted their people to fit neatly into the niches they’d created for them. Not wanting to be another cog in the machine then has me now working independantly, and very satisfied (with the exception of health insurance costs here in the U.S.). But you are absolutely correct in that failure is not an option for keeping any client!

My only caution would be to have plenty of time to work out the kinks of your setup. Shoot tests using the same model of camera you’ll use for the “real thing”. Make sure you’ve got the greenscreen and talent lighting nailed BEFORE the day comes. Once you’ve done a few, you can relax.

I do remember that it was a real hassle without Sharepoints. Searching Sharepoints & SMB should find you the answers.

Yup, I use it sometimes. Must be on XP on the PC side. You’ll want a bit of shareware called SharePoints as well to make life easier. The protocol on the Mac side is called SMB. I did alot of searching/testing on this a couple of years ago, but forget where I posted the success results. Try searching the Apple forums. You’ll need to set a different subnet/IP range for the 1394 ports you’re using (than your ethernet). After all is set up correctly, you may need to wait a few minutes for the devices to “discover” each other as well. If I remember anything else helpful, I’ll post.
