Hello Alan. I got the adapter cable today and it works great!

First, let me say that I have the VariZoom pro Canon zoom controller that I used on my Betacam.

I bought a JonyJib adapter cable to use it with the EX1. Here is what I have:

The cable has a right angle bend that I thought would run downward, but it runs upward.

Anyway, now I can do smooth creep zooms, I can control the maximum zoom speed, I can do smooth variable speed zooms, I can start and stop record and I can play back the last clip! As the Brits say, “it works a treat!”

Varizoom makes an EX1 zoom control, but I have not tried it.

I just ordered an adapter cable for my Canon lens zoom controller. I hope that will let me control the lens much better when on a tripod.

Can you try “updating” with the Others/Clip/Update menu? It’s odd that both would do this. Have you tried other cards?

Do you have the exact same camera profile loaded into both camcorders?

That’s right. Remember when we made the hop from analog to digital and the audio on bars and tone on analog equipment at 0 VU became -20 or -12 db on digital gear? Analog can handle a certain amount of overload and not sound too bad, in fact recording studio engineers used to hit the analog tape recorders with a hot signal(+6 or more) to produce the fat sound of tape compression. No can do with digital.

Start to raise your trim pad on the EX1(r) until the signal sounds clean and you have a volume control level around 4-5.

It all comes down to how well the microphone handles loud sound levels (SPL). If the mic is clipping you are a dead duck. No amount of mixer or camera audio adjustment will save you.
