  • Decent field monitor in $1K range?

Posted by Bob Mark on March 10, 2012 at 11:57 pm

Anybody found a decent field monitor in the $1K range? Looking for SDI in and decent rez (above 800×480). This looks pretty good, but I can’t find any reviews. https://www.swit.us/s7hdmo.html

I too was interested in purchasing one. Called the Canadian distributor for a dealer contact to see one but they never got back to me! Guess Swit is not interested in selling anything! Now I’ll have to find a JVC DT-X71H or Ikan VX7e to demo.

I have seen some negative comments on the Ikan brand. I was looking at Manhattan too, but heard some negatives on a pro users board.
https://www.manhattanlcd.com/ There will always be good and bad reviews.
    The JVC looks promising.

Holy cow – I just saw a pic of the SWIT next to the JVC. Who’s knocking off who? 🙂

Never been a fan of IKAN. In my experience they’ve been okay for framing but worthless for color or contrast.

The Swit and JVC have almost identical specs too. Seems easier to get your hands on the JVC.

A local Swit dealer said they were the same monitor, just repackaged but the Swit distributor said they were not. Guess I’ll save up for a TVLogic or Sony OLED.

I was looking at the format specs for the JVC and Swit and they do not accept 720p 24 and 30 frame signals. This was confirmed to me by an email from JVC.
Kind of strange, since they accept 1080p 24 and 30 frame. That’s a deal breaker for me because I use 720p 30fps quite often.

    Have you looked at SmallHD?

The SmallHD line of field monitors are superb for the money. I was fortunate enough to corral one of the last DP1X monitors sold before they ceased production. You can’t go wrong with something like the DP6. It’s got HDMI. SDI (optional) component, etc.

Yes, I wish they still made the larger one. 5.6″ is too small for me.

I compiled some the info from this thread and other research over here in a chart: https://www.digitalbuilt.com/?p=169

I included the Swit S-1071F (aka JVC DT-X71F ), SmallHD DP6, IkanVX7e, TVLogic VFM-056WP, Atomos Samurai. Might help someone else.
