This is my EX1 setting to match my VariCam It is designed for post color correction to be shown on HD broadcast . This is for a scripted comedy. The camera was teched to a DSC chart with whites at 80 IRE and all settings on as was the VariCam. So this is how the is set up when I shoot. It seems whites expose at 78 IRE for good flesh tones.

So where are you guys running these functions. Here are my current settings.

Gamma Level: +2 (any higher and the knee starts quickly dropping from 109 IRE)
Gamma: Cine 1 (I tried using Cine 3 and this image instantly looked very poppy and video like)
Black Level: -3 (This puts the ped at 0. Anymore unnecessarily crushes the blacks)
Black: 0 (I experimented with changing these and saw no difference on a waveform to any part of the image)

Of course. I missed that in your earlier post. I have same problem but really exaggerated on my Contour camera.

My guess is it is a LOG GOP artifact. One of the downsides of the EX1 is how it compresses the image and one of the results is a wavy vertical line when panning. Try shooting telephone poles from a driving car to really see the issue. I haven’t faced the problem but it occasionally rears its head. Recording onto an external drive eliminates the problem.

Any store that makes glasses can grind you lens. There are lots of super cheap ones around. Bring your diopter in and they will match it. I’ve done this for years.

I own an EX1 and I am still trying to figure out where to set my detail. Currently I am running it at

    DETAIL On
    Level -15
    Frequency 30
    CRISPENING -45
    H/V RATIO 0
    WHITE LIMITER 0
    BLACK LIMITER 0
    V DTL CREATION y
    KNEE APT LEVEL 0

It seems to look good but it is more a result of reading then testing. I am using Panasonic 17″ and 9″ monitors with a Leader Waveform and Vector scope. My questions are.

How do you set your monitors up to view detail.
How do you test the detail. What am I looking at on a test chart.

The footage cuts in with VariCam footage.

First choice. Look on the mic input. You can set it to mic, line and mic plus phantom power. Experiment here.

Second I am assuming you know how to adjust levels on the camera. But be sure you are on external mic. Put your level adjust on manual. You can hit the status button under the handle right rear then roll to the window that displays audio. This is a great window. Try to adjust sound level.

Third go to the AUDIO SET MENU. It has the little musical note. Go to input. I set AGC link to separated. Probably has no effect here. If your audio on rear of camera is set to EXT and Manual. You can access the trim setting. The default is -41dBu. You might be able to adjust your mic here. But realize it will screw other sound inputs you plug in.

  • I’ve just started shooting with my EX1. I make sure every card has a large identifiable number on it and I always shoot in the order of the cards 1, 2, 3 etc.

I use aluminum light stands and c-stand heads and arms. On real sets I use typical c-stands with the curved legs but for my own kit I use the straight leg light stands.
