Not near a camera right now, but you might want to check the position of the slider right at the XLR input. The audio trim may be applicable only when that slide is set to mic level in? I know that the Trim tweak in the menu works for external mics.

I’ve been experimenting with the EX1R’s advanced image control settings, and could benefit from a good guide. Does this DVD address those issues, or is there some other, better source?

Jim, I just went through this process earlier this year. I evaluated the 350, 320, EX1R, and the EX3, finally settling on the EX1R. OTOH – I know several outstanding DPs (including Rick Diamond) who are also very smart equipment-wise, who chose the EX3. I almost chose the 350 (2/3″ sensor, better lens, feathered zooms, better hand-held configuration) but the added weight and price sent me to the EX1R/EX3. The 320 – 1/2″ sensor – why bother? I finally chose the EX1R over the EX3 mostly due to a conversation I had with a repairman who’s seen a lot of broken EX3 viewfinders. I like the way the EX1R’s viewfinder tucks safely into the handle.

otoh – Feathered zooms are hard to do with the supplied lens (which can’t be replaced on the EX1R but can be on the EX3).

After reading a lot of horror stories on this forum about the SD cards, I went the SxS route. Again, YMMV– many excellent shooters have no problems with the SD cards.

Good luck. You are entering the HD world with many, many great choices, none of them bad. You’ll be very happy with the quality, but you also need to think about how to deal with tapeless archiving.

You are correct. FedEx/UPS only works when the schedule is firm, and you have enough other equipment to keep working in the shipped gear’s absence.

I’ve used the Lightware 1629 case. It’s just under 62″ combined, is user-configurable inside with supplied dividers, & can accommodate the smaller Lowel light stands. They also make a rolling version, which slightly exceeds the 62″ due to the wheels, but will probably get by (I do not know how durable the wheels are in the maelstrom of airplane loading). You will likely need a cart on-site if you don’t get the wheeled version.

I wish there were some laboratory-test evidence about whether it is better for the equipment to ride in an absolutely hard case or in a “soft” case like the Lightware. The Pelican/Anvil case won’t crack, but wouldn’t it tend to transmit the shock all the way through into the contents of the case? whereas the Lightware absorbs part of the shock of a drop. Either way, Pelicans or Lightware, I always bubble-wrap all the contents. I was highly skeptical of the Lightware, and I make NO warranty, but all I can say is, when packed weight is critical and I need to take a lot of equipment, Lightware has worked for me – and I have had a bulb shatter after a trip in a Pelican case.

Derek also mentions that this; it appears that at least some of these WA adapters are focusing on the front element of the adapter? I have an adapter for my old Z1, and have noticed that the tiniest problem on the front element can be very distracting.

Are there any WA adapters which are less prone to this problem?
