For now, I wound up simply changing each timeline’s Override setting to Not Set, and it appears so far to be working fine. It was erratic when I used Override in both the buttons and the timelines.

Just out of curiosity, what is the point of having an Override setting on a timeline?

Here’s my situation:

Timelines A, B, C, D.

Menu buttons for PLAY ALL, and for A to play and return to Menu, ditto for B, C, D.

I do need overrides for that, right?

What I’m curious about is why the Menu Button needs to have an override specified, when the override setting in the timeline will take precedence anyway.

I agree with the Patch-it-up advice, if that is possible. But it sounds as if there is a rather significant split-up taking place, in which case I can empathize with your desire to claim your own work by putting your own reel together. If you do, you should let your former colleagues know, sit down and make sure that you’re not stealing their work either, and tell them that it is in everybody’s interest to separate in a clean and classy way (i.e. don’t put my stuff on your reel because it will just make both of us look bad).

Weigh against this:

(1) the cost of legal advice, and
(2) a fight is not going to help you get work — on the contrary, it will turn off potential clients. People will not bother to find out who’s right and who’s wrong — their reaction is more likely to be: “Here are these two groups that can’t get along — maybe we should look for someone who doesn’t have interpersonal issues.”

I’d really appreciate a detailed opinion of an appropriate configuration of a MacPro for FCP Studio. I’m budget-conscious enough to want to buy the computer that will be great for the next three years of SD/HDV and HD editing.

Processor: two 2.66 GHz or two 3 GHz? (+ $800)

Memory: (I’ve read here that one should look to other suppliers besides Apple for memory.) The Mac Pro comes with 1 GB (2x512MB). 2 GB (4x512MB) (+ $300), 4 GB (4x1MB) (+ $1100). There are 8 slots, and I assume there are some rules for adding memory. Any rec’s on what to order, from whom?

Bay 1 Hard Drive: no question — getting the 500 GB for an added $200.

Bay 2-4 Hard Drives: 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA’s @ $400, or an external SATA box? I edit short and long form, and it would be great to be able NOT to power up an external SATA box for the weeks that I don’t really need it. Is there going to be a performance advantage to using internal SATA’s?

Graphics: (I want to be able to use two Dell 2405’s) ATI Radeon X1900 (+ $350) or 2x NVIDIA GEForce 7300 GT 256MB (+ $150)

This happens when I wrack my brain, give up and write to the COW — about five minutes later I get the answer. Maybe somebody is reading this and I’m picking up the brainwaves.

The glitch was due to the fact that I had trimmed a tiny bit of the head of those two timelines, and I hadn’t pulled the video and audio clips up to the head of the timeline.

That is the right thing to do, right? I was worried about sync when doing this — has anyone had trouble with it?
