Good question. This is purely for show. It’s to provide a visual counterpoint to some action on stage. In fact I’d like to be able to customize the display to make it more graphic, but I may have to do that with real-time video processing, once I get the display out to NTSC.

How’d your file transcode marathon work out?”

I assume you’re asking about the project where I had to customize, in three steps, 290 versions of three basic spots, and tried in FCP to create a sequence of a sequence of a sequence, which worked great, even after I changed the first sequence — until FCP suddenly substituted a prior version of the first sequence. I did what I think you said, which was to export a QT movie and reimport that. In fact I wound up doing that over and over. But at least I got through it. Thanks for your help on that one, and my apologies for not getting back to you about it. I guess I didn’t want to think about it for awhile. Very disappointing and disturbing experience, because now I have zero confidence in FCP media management, if that is what it is called. But would Premiere Pro have been any better?

I’d err on the side of caution, especially given that these are children. On the other hand, I have used photos of children taken decades ago, in an historical documentary, because the images told a serious story of poverty and survival. I somehow feel there is a difference, because my use of the pictures had more relevance to the Truth of these kids’ lives than a PSA. But maybe if I saw the script of your PSA, I’d feel that the same way about your use.

If you can persuade the powers that be that using actual photos is a bad idea, this could be a great opportunity to do some casting, art direction and clever costuming — make some 2007 kids look like 1980s kids, shoot it in full color, freeze frame and sepia tone it.

Or just find some smaller-town high school class reunion organizer — he/she might be able to get releases from almost every single person in a class photo, and if any aren’t available you could just photoshop in somebody who will sign. Lots of work either way.

I’ve had a lot of trouble with the round-tripping between FCP and STP. I’ve resorted to exporting as a new QT file, saving the results of the STP session as a copy, and reimporting the file into FCP. I know that the way it’s supposed to be, but I’ve had so many FCP crashes with STP round-tripping that I gave up.
