Someone pointed me in the direction of an application called geekbench that runs performance tests on your machine and spits out a score. I’d be really curious if any of you with a macbook pro ran the test. It seems they score in the 3,000 range.
My macbook 1.83 Intel Core Duo with 2gb ram and Mac OS 10.4.11 scores around a 2379.

Whereas my PowerMac G5 (June 2004 with Dual 2.5ghz and 4gb of ram – same operating system) scores around a 2201:

So, I guess my macbook is already marginally faster than my G5!
I’ll have to take a look at the 17 inch, but I’m really skeptical about getting something that big. It also is a jump in price…and I was hoping to not have to spend money. (I also wonder how hard it is to sell the computers I have.)
On the plus side, I’m a student, so there’s a knock in price and a free ipod I could sell. But, still..
