Thanks Eric. I guess it’s time for a new Zoom H2n. I will always be wary of this one unless the problem is predictable.

Thanks for your reply, Zane. The Firestore is recording DVCPRO HD from my Panasonic HDX900. The software offered at : https://www.calibratedsoftware.com/welcome.html says that it will allow Quicktime DVCProHD files to be played on a Mac. I assume that the Final Cut Express HD will not handle it but might it work for viewing the files? Currently, I can hear the audio but have no video. Is the only solution upgrading to Final Cut Pro Studio?

[jiri vrozina] “..but do not worry,SD picture from HDX900 still look good.”
Thanks Jiri. I was hoping that the quality of the HD recording would be high enough to hold up in the downconversion. It will be interesting to compare the final digibeta with the HD master.

So, it looks like it’s considered safe and legal to travel with the larger Lithium-ion batteries if you can convince your sound person and producer to carry a couple on and you don’t check them.
According to the IATA:
https://www.iata.org/nr/contentconnector/cs2000/siteinterface/sites/whatwedo/dangerousgoods/file/table2.3.aenglish2005.pdf“Lithium ion batteries with an aggregate equivalent lithium content of more than 8 g but not more than 25 g may be carried in carry-on baggage if they are individually protected so as to prevent short circuits and are limited to two spare batteries per person.”
There are a few options to consider here.
Thanks for the help.

I agree that it is unlikely that a baggage inspector will question the Lithium content of my batteries. Although there is little risk of being caught, is there a real safety risk in checking a case with 3 or4 Dionic 160’s onto a plane? If the batteries are designed with sufficient safeguards, then why the restrictions?

I think I get this “A” frame concept. Hopefully, the HDX900 uses it. I read over this Panasonic overview:
ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/panasonic/drivers/pbts/papers/Overcrank-WP.pdf
which helped.
Many thanks,

[john sharaf] “60 fps (really 59.94) when you’ll be using FRC for slow motion effects.”
John,
I have a question about the difference between the Varicam and the HDX900 regarding shooting for slow motion effects. My understanding is that one common setting for a Varicam would be 60p, with the intention of slowing down the footage later. My HDX900 also has a menu choice of 60p when in the 720p system mode. Is there any difference in these recordings from point of view of an editor wanting to slow the footage down?
Thanks,

[Philip Goetz] “t seems to me that if there were just another 1/4 of an inch of adjustment as you turn the diopter to the left, then that would be enough.”
Philip,
I know you posted this a while back but I just googled “diopter HDX900” and found it. I’m having exactly the same issue with my HDX900. My old Ikegami V-55 viewfinder gives me no problem but this new one just doesn’t adjust quite far enough for these aging eyes. If you ever resolved your problem I would like to know how you did it.

My thinking was that since a 1/60 shutter removes the flickering from 60 cycle flourescent light when shooting in PAL that the same would be true for HD at 1080-50i or 25p.

I find that the double case is cumbersome, especially when I only need to use one light out of it. Packing each head into its own pelican case works well but I see now that it may increase the likelyhood of breakage since the case is often on its side, especially in transit. The lamp rattles around and cracks when it hits the protective beaker. In order to check if the bulbs are seated properly, you still have to remove the beaker so maybe just taking them out before the flight is the way to go. Clearly, the original double case with the heads either facing up, as John suggests, or down (not sideways) provides the most protection. Thanks, Rob.
