I couldn’t find a DVCPROHD forum or a general camera forum, so here we are. One of my clients has the following issue:

I’m the proud owner of the HDX 900 as well as a P2 and the 1400 HD VTR, all of which are the central hub of our facility. You should know that until three months ago, we were an all Sony shop, so this has been a big change for us.

I’m writing because of a problem that we are experiencing with our viewfinder.

I have nearly slightly less than 20/20 vision and when I look into the viewfinder, I am not able to adjust the diopter to make the image sharp. In contrast, the P2’s viewfinder has plenty of adjustment to the left and right and works great. But the 900 viewfinder is flawed in my opinion and my ability to obtain a crisp image in the viewfinder is impaired. It seems to me that if there were just another 1/4 of an inch of adjustment as you turn the diopter to the left, then that would be enough.

We’d appreciate any help that you can offer us.

Easy solution. Buy a 52 mm close-up diopter at your local camera shop and screw it into the HDX viewfinder. It will cost you about fifty dollars and give you more than enough focusing range.

Don’t be offended, but is the viewfinder in and locked? I am co nstantly taking it off when I’m using my microdollie and occasionally I don’t put it back in place properly and I’ve experienced the same thing until I slap myself and correctly place it in correctly.

    Philip,
I know you posted this a while back but I just googled “diopter HDX900” and found it. I’m having exactly the same issue with my HDX900. My old Ikegami V-55 viewfinder gives me no problem but this new one just doesn’t adjust quite far enough for these aging eyes. If you ever resolved your problem I would like to know how you did it.

    Bob,

For many cameras, you can purchase a diopter that will mount in the viewfinder to extend the adjustment. There sometimes was a screw thread of 52mm or such to accomodate commercially available diopters made for still camera lenses. Give your viewfinder a good look over to see if you can figure out how to add this option.
