Thank you for the reply. It’s possible transcoding to pro res would make FCP happier. Funny thing I can work for hours with smooth playback, then I might check something online using Safari and come back to FCP and the timeline playback starts to stutter and jerk every 5 secs or so. Restarting the Mac Pro will usually clear this for a while until it starts stutering again. Seems like a system performance thing, strange.
Used to NOT do this, same files, changed nothing.

Thank you, Shane, Scott, Mark. You have given me sound advice.
Presently my client has installed quicktime pro 7 and he is able to open the file and in the lower left corner you can view time code.
I’ll use the DVD window burn feature in the future too. Now I’ll have to figure out a smooth workflow when I’m given pages of time code numbers and clip names. My eyes are bleeding thinking about this one.

Thank you all for these great ideas. Almost there I think….

Adam, the method you described is what I was thinking, but is there a method of “batch” exporting the subclips for overnight render? If so how? (my segmented timeline is 3 hours, ouch!) So the creation of the sub clips to new files is sort of the painful step.

Once I have the 50 new subclips in a bin I can either use Compressor
or other conversion software.

The client wants the 50 clips as .wmv files. I think last year I made them .mpg files using apple Compressor and windows media player played those fine.
