I use Reel DVD and it is solid but not suited to advanced authoring projects. It does make highly compatible discs.

I wouldn’t lose too much sleep over the forthcoming HD-DVD formats. VHS is minimal quality NTSC which looks pretty bad on a large HD display. If you have access to a $350,000 standards converter, you can make it look farly good. Otherwise don’t worry about it. Standard def DVD will be around for a long time — there are just too many discs out there.

7200 RPM drives are on the slow side for media storage in non-linear edit systems. That does explain why you can digitize 15:1 but not higher resolutions. Most edit systems spec 10K or 15K RPM drives, either singly or RAIDed.

Try disabling the SCSI controller and see what happens. Also make sure that your Mojo & storage are on seperate data busses.

If you can digitize 15:1 but not higher resolutions, you storage is running slowly. Are your SATA drives up to the task?

1. I believe SATA drives are not supported by Avid, but I don’t recall what the specific issue is.

2. Avids (even the big iron systems) have trouble with drive partitions larger than 200GB.

3. Make sure the storage is on a different PC internal data bus from the one driving your Firewire port/Mojo.

I hope some of this points you in the right direction.

There is a FW port for your VTR on the Mojo. You must connect the VTR there so that the Mojo can process incoming audio/video and send it on to the computer.

Many effects will become real time with the Mojo attached to your system.

There are AES to Embedded Audio adapters on the market, but they are a bit pricey. There are disembedders for those wishing to digitize SDI with embedded audio. Check with Miranda or Markertek for these devices.

Many sound effect libraries have web sites where you can search their libraries and preview effects. When you find what you need, order a download or a disc.

You can’t export a Quicktime without using a codec. “None” is an uncompressed codec, but it is not as efficient as “Animation”. Use the animation codec at best quality — that codec will be on every Mac.
