  • I’m seeing the same thing. It seems to happen with only certain types of transcodes. As I recall, conversions to MXF/ OP1A DNxHR. The problems seem to have started with Resolve v12.5, as I never saw this before that version, with the same kinds of outputs. BTW, I’m on a PC not a MAC.

  • I might suggest a couple of things, here:
1-Resolve has a pretty good calibration procedure using any one of a number of different color charts. That’s the firsts step before trying to read color values with the eyedropper.
2-when exposing video, I have found it more appropriate to expose to 90% white. Every gamma has a different IRE value for 90% white, or for 18% grey, for that matter. So, it’s pretty important to know the IRE values for the color gamut/gamma you’re shooting in.

I cut my last job with Resolve 12.5. In my experience, using Resolve was a bit tedious, at first. After I developed the muscle memory for the keyboard shortcuts, I enjoyed using it. One of the things that made the job exceptionally easy was the custom setup I made for my Ripple/Element external control panels. Very Nice.

Having said this, I’ll note that my timeline was pretty simple. Simple transitions and limited compositing and special FX. I use, also, Media Composer. In comparison, I’ll add that Resolve doesn’t come near to the file management capabilities of the Avid. In the future, for the time being, I’ll be using Resolve for simpler jobs. For the long form jobs, I’ll be sticking with Media Composer.

    Sascha,
    Two followup points:
    1-I’m on a PC, not a MAC
2-The AVX and standalone versions of NeatVideo run very fast. It’s only the OFX version, withing Resolve, that seems to take forever to process. I’ve read many accounts of other PC users encountering this same issue.

I’ve not experienced an overwhelming number of crashes with Neatvideo OFX, altho’ it DOES crash occasionally. However, processing time is exceptionally long; and, therefore unusable. Other applications with the Neatvideo plugin, like AFX for Media Composer, take a fraction of the time.

I’m shooting with an F5; and, editing in Media Composer and Davinci Resolve. I can offer a few of my own observations and experiences, after a new build over a year ago.

For editing 4K content, all my media drives are Samsung Evo 850, 1 Tb drives. They perform exceptionally well as single drives, or even better as dual RAID 0 systems. Software RAID is adequate, I haven’t found hardware RAID to be any faster. I am committed to Thunderbolt II. USB3.0 has not shown me to be fast enough. A lot of the issue is with 3rd party drive harware that limits thrupu to less than full USB3 specs. Thunderbolt doesn’t seem to have this problem. Thunderbolt 3 systems are just beginning to hit the market. I would focus on Tbolt 3, altho’. Tbolt 2 has been very adequate for me.

I’ve used both Macbook Pro and Asus PC based systems. Because of the limitation of a single video card in the Macbook Pro, I’ve found it to be inadequate for 4K production. I built up a Tbolt 2 PC system; and, have been generally pretty happy. The initial build used an nVidia Quadro 4200 GPU, for compatibility with Media Composer. The Quadro 4200’s biggest advantage is that it gives me 10-bit display and activates the Full color space on my HP24xx display. Subsequently, I installed a second nVidia GTX 1070 GPU for Davinci Resolve support. This configuration has more than doubled my thruput renders in Resolve and Premiere. Media Composer remains unchanged, since it can only use one GPU.

One more note….there is a Kickstarter offering for a Tbolt PCIe add-on card that will utilize a GPU. The offering will come with a GTX1060 GPU. From what I’ve read, the optimized GPU level is 3 GPU’s. Adding more will not significantly improve video processing. This hardware will upgrade the Macbook Pro to a second GPU, as well as providing 3 GPU capability for my PC workstation.

  • Go visit the S p e c t r a c a l website for the software app to do this…..the right way is with either C A L M A N or L I G H T S P A C E software.

  • I’m using a mini-monitor; and, it works great.

    Leonard,
The answer to your question depends on what hiccups you’re willing to put up with. I was editting on a pretty fast PC (4GHz, 32G RAM), using nothing but SSD’s for media drives; and, I was still getting stuttering timelines in 4K. I finally added a second video card, one of the new GTX1070’s to my existing Quadro K4200. That seemed to cure the problem.

Unfortunately, I’m using a WAVE control panel that doesn’t include these parameters. There doesn’t seem to be any published information showing what the hot keys are for these parameters, because then I could program them into a 3rd party USB controller. That’s why I’m asking. If there are hotkeys for these items, I’d be very grateful to know what they are.
