    I don’t disagree with you, Eric. I’m just suggesting that if your clients are viewing on non-calibrated monitors, it’s ok to grade on a CALIBRATED LCD or Plasma. Just be aware that a consumer LCD/Plasma will NEVER be right, even if it’s “so-called” calibrated. A consumer LCD can be calibrated for white point, gamma, and luma at a single IRE level. Once you move off of 100% IRE, for example, all bets are off. Which means that the hi-lites may look good, but the mids and shadows will have a tint…..or the mids will look good while the hi-lites and shadows will have a tint….but, you get my point.There is no built in adjustment to correct these values and there is no sensor/software solution that will generate a useable LUT, that I’m aware of.

  • when I rolled back from Eucon 3.0 to 2.7.1, I, first, uninstalled v3.0. I wonder if you can install 2.7.1 over the top of 3.0?

    So, barring the perfect(and exhorbitantly priced) professional solution…
    May I ask what delivery media most of your customers are viewing with?
    It would be great to get the colors spot on, but, if all your customers are viewing wedding DVD’s on their home TV sets, for example, is it cost effective to grade on an HDTV?

    It is quite disparaging to realize that most consumer viewers don’t have their home sets even remotely close to professional standards.

    Sadly, and I don’t mean to be discouraging, but….
    There is not a commercial monitor on the market that will ever display REC709 accurately. I know that’s a pretty big statement, but, the fact is that the best you can hope for is to get the luma properties close at a single display intensity and the white point calibrated. usually, these calibrations occur at 100% IRE. The RGB color map for a monitor doesn’t even come close to REC709. And there’s not adjustment provided to correct it. The exception to this statement is a professional cc monitor, like an FSI, or similar. Otherwise, you’ll pound your head against the wall to get the colors and luma values right at 100% IRE, only to have them go to hell at other luminances.

    You can never be sure. I have always run the latest QT version, unapproved, or not. I’ve experienced odd malfunctions like an improper 10-bit waveform monitor in the cc tools. The worst problem with running unapproved QT versions is that you get chastised in this forum and support at Avid isn’t forthcoming.

    I think this happens when the two monitors are at different resolutions. The fix is as you stated. I would be sure to grab the entire MC Workspace window and drag it back smaller. If you do that just for the Bin window inside the workspace, it will revert back out of reach when you shut down/restart MC.

    hmmm…
    You know, if you go to the bin where your AMA files reside, right click on the linked file icon, then select “Source Settings” from the menu dropdown. When the Source Settings window opens you will be presented with a number of color selections. Feel free to play with these, but, typically, you want to select either “Full Range” or “Broadcast Range” depending on what the color range of your source footage is.

    RGBs is the least wrong of the two wrong ways. I’m afraid that won’t help you, much. You can tune the 2410 for the right luminance values, but, I’m afraid it’s incapable of reproducing the right colors for Rec709. That’s not to say it can’t reproduce Rec709, because it can. You can, with 3rd party software, set the right white point on the 2410. Unfortunately, the RGB values the 2410 displays exceed the RGB color values that Rec709 is limited to. Even trying to calibrate with a photographic sensor like Eye 1 or Spyder won’t work for you. The weakness of ANY of these non professional desktop LCD’s is that they don’t allow tuning the RGB corner points in the color map. So, we live with the imperfections we get.

    If it’s any consolation to you, 99% of client monitors and playback devices are so poorly calibrated that even if you provided perfect color balanced footage, it would never display right.
